Should i buy new brakes and pad setup?

Postby vinshonz » Thu Oct 25, 2018 8:26 pm

HI Guys, want to know what you would rekon i should do?

I bought new DBA T2 rotors early last year, had EBC reds pads @ 50% (so i didn't change them)
Good set up, no problems.

This year my pads were on the indicators, so i bought Intima pads.
One thing i notice right away is they didn't come with a backing plate like the EBC reds i had.
Machine rotors, slap them on, bled brakes.

They squeal like crazy, took them off, rears were glazed.
I've taken the pads on and off multiple times now to try fix this problem and almost given up

Should i buy new Pads? or is my brake set up un-fixble now and i should just buy brand new rotor and pads?

Sounds like you need some anti-squeak shims, aka backing pads.
What a great opportunity to get some in titanium for less heat transfer to the pistons.
Stainless steel works too.
Iirc a Russian vendor sells them on Top Shelf and Rare Parts FB group.

But generally:
https://www.google.com/search?q=brembo+ ... refox-b-ab
There's also a specific grease or goo to help the issue.
Bear in mind, if they're glamour pads, they may take a while to bed in, also dependent on your bedding technique and or driving style.
Mine took a few months to bed and have since provided maybe 5 years of non-squeak service.

Yeh thanks Ben

im in such a dillemma..

Option 1: cheapest option - buy shims, might or might not fix my problem.
Option 2: buy new pads, might or might not fix my problem if my rotors gone bad too
Option 3 and most costly option replace rotors and pads brand new :angry2: :suicide:

You know whats also annoying? Intima won't sell me the shims seperately and they apparently have started selling pads with backing plates... i must of got the short end of the straw sigh

Your rotors will be fine.
If you actually make an investment in good shims, eg Ti etc, you’ll have em for good.
I like the Yperion shims :)
https://www.google.com.au/search?q=tita ... ent=safari

Just put out some eoi’s, someone has to have a spare set of normal ones cheap.

Thank Ben, but after looking at some shim prices they come up close to $130 for a full set.
I might aswell buy new brake pads that come with shims/backing plates with that money

Now i must decide which brand should i go with: Brembo pads or DBA pads
P54039 | Brembo Front Brake Pads (DB1678)
P56048 | Brembo Brake Rear Pads (DB1521)

DB1678SP | DBA Street Performance Front Brake Pads
DB1521SP | DBA Street Performance Rear Brake Pads

Could you help me decide? i honestly just want this squeal to go away

The squeal will go once the new brakes are bedded in.
The pads should come with bedding in instructions or find one eg on nasioc:
https://www.google.com.au/search?q=nasi ... ent=safari
What pads? I went for the qfm low dust, years later I’m still waiting to install them, still got the og jdm pads on, no idea what they are but they’ve been great :P
I’d go a dixel street pad maybe, if not qfm.

RDA plain rotors if your rotors are worn down, and Intima SS pads.

They’re only noisy because no shims or not bedded :)

its been bedded in many times, i believe is coz Intima's didnt give me shims or backing plates.

Their excuse is "evo's dont use it"

Therefore im going to buy new pads with backing plates like every other brand that provides one built into the pad

Since we’re going in circles here, I googled the issue.
Take a peek at the thread in the first hit:

Thanks for your help Ben, we ain't going in circles lol.

You said i need shims,
I said I ain't paying $130-190$ for shims when i can buy brand new pads with that money...
So i've decided to buy new pads that come with backing plates/shims, just waiting for supercheap auto's next sale

ps. if i bought the shims and my pads are beyond fixable, i basically bought some expensive flat metal

pps. i emailed a parts manager at subaru for shim prices. i need 8 shims @ $25 each.. $200 total...

Seems a bit steep lol.
At least they’d come in pairs?

The titanium shims are cheaper!

I've had intima ss for about 2 years and had to rebed twice. They just don't bite properly like other brands.
Will be putting in qfm premium soon, had good experiences with them on couple of cars
