Recommendations for performance tyres for GT-B daily?

Hi all,

I have a 2007 Liberty GT-B Spec 2.5T 6spd that is stock other than a road tune. I'm replacing the front LCA bushes with whiteline and need 2 tyres at same time. The current tyres are Falken 215/45/18 and the rears are about 50% gone. Can see the cords on the fronts inside because of the worn bushes.

It's been a while since I bought performance tyres so I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction.

I'm looking for high performance and good mileage. I'd rather 80-85% of potential performance if it will significantly increase the mileage as it's a daily car. I'd consider changing the profile and width and doing all 4 to get the right mix between performance and mileage.

I'm happy to go away and dyor so I'm looking for a few options to look at.

Thanks for looking.

What type of Falkens?
Our family have used two or three sets of ZE912's
Unimpressed.
Wore out quickly and did not gip well.

If your backs are 50% worn and you want to upgarde to better rubber, best you repalce all four (as you seem to intend to do)
Differing characteristics between front and the rear old Falkens will not bode well for your AWD driveline.

Thanks mate. The Falkens were Z3425 or something like that, just ordinary ones so I didn't write down the number. They were on the car when I bought it.

I'm happy to pay more for good tyres but want to avoid just what you said about the ZE912s by choosing based on price and manufacturer claims

S001 on the 4 for 3 deal at any Bridgestone dealer.

Worth upgrading to 8/8.5 rims for 235 40 r18’s: they’re very affordable in that size.

Not sure about other sizes, but nexen or ovations should do the trick for a daily at around $100 ea.

Falken Zeix are trash, avoid if you value you and your passengers' lives.

I have Hankook K120 on my car, excellent tyre wet and dry (got them for $120 each).
S001, RE003, Michelin PS4, all good known tyres.

Note: be careful of tyre dealers trying to sell you all-seasons. You don't need it unless you're driving in freezing conditions all the time (i.e. live on top of Mount Kosciuszko).

Also research the replace 2x tyres thing.
Be nice to your centre diff and at least check the rolling diameter of the old/new mixed set once installed.
Eg paint spot check...

Thanks guys, much appreciated.

Looking at RE003s at the moment but I will research the others as well

I’ve not tried re003, which is described as a performance tyre by bridgestone...
I just went to the S001: extreme performance.

I guess the price differential is much higher in less common (than 235 40 r18) oem sizes?

I'll check on that for sure.

Basically, I wasn't feeling the hybrid style of S001s with the "semi slick" line down the middle of them but I suppose bridgestone knows what they're doing re: keeping every part at good temp/efficiency, and the middle would have raised temps unless you're massively into it on a track.

It's probably not going to be possible for me to get wider rims and put it all together in the time frame as my fronts are toast and I use the car everyday. I can feel about 0.5-1mm raised cords on one front (the inner 20% of the surface). The other has cords showing but still pretty flat against the hand.

I don't mind paying more for more fun as long as they don't wear out in half the time. I dislike the feeling of burning away money on the tyres when I'm going down the ring road (highway) on cruise control.

Any Melbourne suggestions for somewhere that won't bullshit me and make this easy for me? or try to give me Khumos lol? I'd go to the rally tire guy for advice and purchase but I've lost his number since those days.

Whack some $100 dollar tyres on if you're planning to upgrade rims.

I know heaps of car nuts who say "you've got rocks in your head if youre paying for glamour tyres on a daily" (like I do).
I gotta try nexen, haida or ovations, pretty sure 90% of the time I wont be able to tell the difference.

Dont forget new tyre age, as well. I'd rather fresh affordable tyres than old good tyres :)

A very quick google revealed the goodrides for even less at tyroola.

All this tyre talk has me googling symmetric non-directional tyres for full rotation potential ;)

Thanks guys, looks good.

I've asked for quotes from installers through tyresales. The tyres are installed and alignment as part of the price but I've asked them to get back to me with prices for the LCA bushes, sway bar end link and sway bar mount bushes.

It's pretty annoying as I'd rather do at least part of this myself but I've not got a garage to work in any more.

Cheers for all your suggestions
