Chunky sidewall tyres

Postby Mr Water » Sun May 13, 2018 1:09 pm

Hey guys - long time no post.

Just bought a new property and the driveway is a bit nasty in a few sopts clearence wise. Ive decided instead of buying a car with slightly more clearance i will lift the lib up slightly via my coilovers (max 1 inch), and fit some chunky tyres. Going to go for a very different look!

Now i remember seeing someone somewhere who had done something similar - smaller rims, with big meaty tyres on them. Ive been searching but blow me if i cant find it. Anyone got any pics of a car with non low profile tyres? not 4wd mud spec, just big sticky meaty road tyres. Like the traditional ole hoosier tyres on drag cars.

Actually quite curious to see what a utility style Gen4 Lib will look like (i know, most likely just an outback but hey, humor me!) The rola roofrack system looks quite nice already i think, and them combined with a towball is very usefull while im doing some renos.

Thanks guys! I know this wont appeal to all tastes - but i want to keep my baby hah.

There’s only so much extra tyre diameter available before your speedo is unroadworthy (reading x% under actual speed), or your taller tyres will scrub the wheel wells on lock or compression.

It’s probably an insignificant amount of added height compared to raising the coilovers.

I didn’t want to compromise my suspension travel for looks, but my car looks ok on my pokey rims 18x8.5 +35 and around a finger gap or more f&r. +40/45 should be flush on 8.5...
I can get over most challenging driveways, the worst with a 45” turn, and that’s with a 3” mufflered mid pipe...

So perhaps if you’re currently tucking, then going up could work.

Very True! Should of mentioned i ment dropping an inch or so in rim size, and then increasing sidewall to keep rolling diameter to a similar level.

Yes, i think lifting it will def get me enough lift - i just think that if i am going to have a big ole fender/wheel gap i may as well try and make it look intentional.
Just not sure what stlye of rim to go for...

Thanks for the thought!

Kinda like Braid or Compomotive w/o the pricetag and all in decent fitments.

There’s definitely a meaty tyre thread on lgt...

And a method rim thread on nasioc ;)
Locally, Koya do custom offset and pcd on some of their single piece rims...
