6 piston Brembos.

Postby TBSTI-Wagon » Wed Feb 28, 2018 8:04 am

Had to laugh last night.

I always hunt around on the Yahoo auctions for nice JDM stuff to buy. Recently bought an SP1 wheel/brakes (for my motorbike), and a few odds and ends for the Liberty out of there (including one of those centre bezels which neatly house a Nexus 7, and an FSL-21 module for the stereo).

I'll often search for Tuned by STI stuff, and - rarely - find genuine S402 pieces. Recently, for example, someone sold a set of those gorgeous BBS rims in 18x8 which came on the S402s. For $AUD2500 before fees and shipping... :(

Anyway, came across a full set of S402 brakes. 6-piston fronts, and what are the same twin-piston rear brakes which our TBSTI has.

The 6-piston brakes are probably the ultimate bling for a Liberty/Legacy (IMHO), and I remember reading an article about the S402 when it came out. Some journos attended something of a testing session at the Nurburgring for the car. One of the engineers there said something like "The 4-piston brakes would have been more than adequate for the car, but we wanted the best components we could get for S402..." (or something like that).

So, in thinking about the sorts of things I'd like to do to the car, I suspect that the brakes will be amongst the last/least important.

Oh...and the price for the set of S402 brakes?

~$AUD6000.00 before fees and shipping.

Worth it?

Nup.

If anything, that just confirms the value proposition (or the lack thereof).

Can't say what the quality of those brakes would be like, but that price looks incredibly (too?) cheap on the surface of it...

The price shown isn't for the 8 piston. You need to scroll down and select big 8 as an option. While you're there get the big 6 for the rears 8)

Indeed...

Even so, selecting 4 piston rears and 8 piston fronts is "only" $4700 or so all up. (Compared to the OEM Brembo 6-piston fronts/2-piston rears at closer to $6K).

I suspect (but haven't checked) that even the 4-piston fronts which come on the TBSTIs would probably sell for a fair chunk on the 2nd-hand market.

They're pretty much the same as D2/random VIP brand/K Sport brakes I believe. The Skyline people have no issues with running them on the track.
