Thanks Surge - I thought strut top bearing at first, but popping the cap showed nothing out of order in the ball race. Is your rubber giving out around the edges - it looks like that a bit but it may just be shadow?

There's no grease escaping my strut tops but I guess Id better try cleaning and lubing the strut shaft, a-la "Bilstein Knock" temp remedy and see if that gives me anything.

My noise is getting steadily more noticeable and that matches with the rubber tearing worse but could also be the lower ball joint (under the hub) but I did not feel any play in that at all.

Starting to give me the shits!

So, jacked front left up, wheel in the air, lifted the strut top protector sleeve, cleaned the strut seal and then sprayed Inox and silicone lube on the seal and up the strut top.
Lowered car, took it for a drive......

Noise appears to be gone! :| Either jacking it up, and/or lunging the strut does the trick, at least for a while.

If it returns in a week or so I guess that may confirm the fabled "Bilstein Knock", like this discussion: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=30731&hilit=Bilstein+knock

Hmmmm, 75000 km.....

So it looks like Bilstein knock - sticking of the shaft seal when turning and simultaneously braking or accelerating.

Jacked up both fronts to clean and applied the dry silicone this time - most noise has gone but I'm sure it wont be gone forever.

So despite the LCA rear bush being a bit torn it is not problematic yet.

Solutions I guess are strut rebuilds or replacement - question is with what?
