Pirelli P-Zero Rosso 215 45 18

Howdy

I have Pirelli P-Zero Rosso 215 45 18 tyres on my tbSTI Enkei rims (I think they were factory spec, but I assume on 2nd set when I got the car)

They still have tread after around 45,000kms, but they're starting to screech around corners.
Have been really happy with them - great grip (until recently), quiet, etc

I'm hoping to replace them with the same but can't seem to find anywhere at a reasonable price. They appear to be discontinued.
Found this, but if the pic is anything to go by, it's not the same tyre: http://www.stgeorgetyres.com.au/tyres/p ... etail.aspx
I believe it has a symmetrical/directional pattern.

Can get the Pzero Neros for about $180 each, but I presume they're an inferior tyre?

1. Does anyone know where I can get the Rossos under $200/corner in Melbourne
2. Any suggestions for something better at this price?

Seems 215 is an odd size, but I have no understanding about whether a 220/225 would be suitable, but if they are I wouldn't mind the extra width in terms of aesthetics if it doesn't adversely affect performance or speedo calibration. Definitely don't want to drop down to a 40 though.

Any advice would be appreciated. Had a quick search of the threads but couldn't find anything recent which is relevant.

The Enkei's are 7.5" wide so should normally have 225 wide tyres (and I think they were a 40 profile when the car was originally sold). 215/45 R18 tyres are normal for standard BSpec rims (7" wide).

You can safely go to 235 on 7.5" rims. In fact 235/40 would be a good choice. If you want to keep the 45 profile (and keep your speedo "legal") then you should probably look for 225/45.

Look at the Bridgestone S001 as a replacement tyre if you want a "premium sport luxury" tyre (it's the effective replacement for the RE050A tyres that came stock on our cars), or the RE003 if you're after a more aggressive tyre (it's grippier, but will wear faster and be a bit noisier than the S001).

You can often get "buy 3, get 4" deals on Bridgestone tyres, either through Bridgestone Select or other dealers (I believe Bob Jane have an offer at present in NSW at least).

Myself, I'm on Sumitomo HTR Z3 tyres at present, I've been impressed with them (the RE003 wasn't out when I bought, and I couldn't get hold of the S001s on the day).

One thing to be aware of is that if you change tyre size (width or profile), your spare will have a different rolling diameter, and the AWD systems on our cars dislike one tyre being a different size. Something to be careful of .

Cheers for your reply.
Are there any advantages/disadvantages in 225 in place of 215? I'm guessing they look slightly wider which gives a tougher appearance?

According to a few tbSTI review sites, mine are how they came from the factory:

This post has a snapshot of the tyre placard fitted to an MY08 tbSTI
viewtopic.php?f=10&t=31248
At least the MY08 had 225/40R18
Cheers!

the carsguide report (http://www.carsguide.com.au/car-reviews ... ooker-9552) is for a 2.0 litre engine, so this for a pre-facelift tbSTI version, probably 2008.
The MY08 tbSTI had 225/40R18, evidence being the tyre placard.

You car appears to be an MY07 tbSTI.
Suggest you also check your tyre placard, if you have not already done so.

Yes, mines an MY07
Not sure which part you read? the article is about MY07s (post-FL), and mentions "The 2.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged horizontally opposed engine now puts out 194kW"
Pre-FL tbSTI would be 2006 only, not 2008

Will check the tyre placard out of interest anyway, cheers

Ah good spot :D It's a misprint - The 2L (2006, pre-FL) tbSTI had 200kw, not 194kw.
Both the post-FL MY07/MY08 tbSTIs had the 194kw 2.5L

And para 5 of the same article mentions 2.5L:
"The 2.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged horizontally opposed engine now puts out 194kW @ 6000rpm and 350Nm of torque @ 2800rpm thanks to an upgraded engine management unit."

Also, the 2L (MY06) didn't have the Brembos, which is mentioned twice in the article.

Don't believe anything in those car reviews... (then again, don't believe anything you read in forums either...)

The 225 will give a little more rim protection and yes, will probably give a tougher appearance - but it'll be minimal.
The thing is tyre choice changes with the different sizes. If you can find a "common" size that fits your rim there will be more choice.
The main issue is to make sure it's legal and within spec. 7.5" rim can take 225/45 legally and it's within spec...
It'll even correct your speedo slightly - win win win...
