I'm thinking of changing the wheels on my 3.0R and I was wondering would I need to worry about brake clearance on the stock caliper, I was thinking of changing to OEM 86/BRZ 17" rims with 48+ offset. Does anyone know would these clear?

New question, more relevant to the title, what would be the absolute minimum off set required to clear 3.0R brakes? The wheels I'm looking at have 38 offset, the guy at the wheel shop said it may not fit.

What width are they?

Offset works opposite to how you would think.. The lower the number, the further away they are from the brakes (closer to fender)

It's more about diameter with these stock brakes: 17" minimum or whatever diameter and offset was stock

FYI: 19 x 8.5 +35 is around the practical maximum limit for a lib pending many other factors....

The wheels I'm looking at would be 17x8 for the front and 17x9 in the rear. And a second set would just be 17x7 all around.

Awd needs square fitment so same spec tyre & rim f&r only offset can change.
Or you'll blow your center diff...

Okay, staggered wheels are out the window, so wheels have to be equal all around. I've looked a the wheels thread and seen that the widest people go is 8", I'm guessing 8.5 starts rubbing? What are the pros and cons of wider wheels?

Staggered width yes.

Basically - what it comes down to is that you must maintain the same rolling diameter across all four wheel/tyres. If you don't, you'll screw your centre diff, as the front wheels and rear wheels will rotate at different speeds (and have different friction co-efficients, and this will cause friction in the centre diff that will eventually cause it to fail).

For what it's worth, it's also a bad idea to run different tyre sizes front to rear - 225/45R17 front and 235/45R17 rears as an example is enough to cause grief, even though the difference in rolling diameter is really tiny.

Different offsets aren't an issue (at least for the diffs, it can have an impact on handling because it impacts on front/rear track), as the rolling diameters remain the same (assuming the same tyre width/profiles).
