Do people recommend buying HUB centric rings on aftermarket rims?

If the hub on the aftermarket rim isn't the same size at the hub on the car then you will need them. If you don't you'll get all sorts of wheel vibration through the steering wheel. Buy lots of plastic ones, metal ones are known to fuse on to the hub.

Not really.
The wheel nuts centre the wheel on the studs.

I guess it depends. Since Subaru wheel nuts are tapered it will jiggle a whole lot less than flat faced nuts & wheels. I'd still get hubs though..

But now 100% of the load is on your wheel studs as opposed to load on your hubs.

Plastic hub rings will be fine...I had them on for over 30,000km and they didn't melt or crack.

Still gradually tighten each nut in a star pattern.

Does anyone know the centre bore diameter off hand by any chance?

To clarify - the purpose of your wheel studs and nuts is not to hold the wheel in place vertically, but to pull it hard against the face of the hub (and around the centre bore). The hub and bore hold the wheel in its position. At no stage should the weight of the car rest on the studs, as the sheer strength (ie the strength when a sheering force is put on them) is not sufficient to deal with the loads encountered when a car is driven.

The wheel nuts have some centering function as they're tightened onto the wheel studs, but that's to ensure that the clamping force applied by the nuts is evenly spaced on the wheel and hub, not to hold the weight of the car.
