225 or 235?

Howdy all,

I'm in the market for some new tyres at the moment. I know what brand/model tyres I want but I don't know if I should get 225/40R18 or 235/40R18.

Is anyone running 235/40R18 on the stock tbSTI rims? If so, could you perhaps post some pictures? I would be keen to see how 235/40R18 fils out the guards and how it looks overall.

All input appreciated. Thanks in advance =)

235/40 is the way to go, much meatier. It fills the guards noticeably better (my stock ones are 215/45/18). But doesn't do anything to help the weak offset which is really noticeable in the rear.

Any photos you find around the place with my green wheels on are 235/40/18 on the standard tbSTi rims (07 and 08 are the same size/offset wise).

If your rims are only 7", then they will muffin a little bit. It won't look too bad on 7.5", but it really is more suited to wider rims IMO. Of course what I think doesn't matter - go with what you think looks good.

EDIT: You can see it muffining a bit on mynameisdaniel's pics.

tbSTi rims are 7.5" wide, 235 is only slightly wider than the rims in person, enough to give minimal rim protection (although it varies with tyre type).

From memory, wasn't Aussie-delivered TbSTi rims only 7" wide while JDM-delivered ones were 7.5"? That's where my concern comes from.

Aus TbSTI rims are 7.5" wide and the JDM are 8" wide

Ahh, got it. Cheers.

Damn it Daniel. I hate looking at your wheels because it makes me want to paint mine that colour!

225 will handle better, not that most of the forum members care about such details these days.

Dunlop star spec z1 were much chunkier than hankock evo fwiw and night and day difference in both handling and wear rates.

You guys are legends. Thanks for all the input.

I will definitely be going with 235/40R18 then if that is the case. I much prefer the meatier look than the stretched look. Not a fan of stretched tyres.

I currently have the stock MY08 17x7.5" tbSTI wheels so I'll wrap them in 235s. I have plans to buy JDM S402 18x8.0 wheels soon so I will be moving tyres from the current rims to the new ones.

Do you guys running 235 have any issues with scrubbing?

Cheers

Running 18x7.5 +55 shouldn't have any scrubbing issues, stock height or dumped (on coilovers). Same with 18x8 (+48 from memory). I have minor scrubbing issues running 235s but then again I'm running a considerably more aggressive set up (18x8.5 +46 and only 1 degree of negative camber at the fronts). Scrubbing is only confined to the guard liners though so not really that big an issue in the grand scheme of things :)

Do it Nathan! ;)

I've got 235/40/18 on my JDM STi wheels and I've had the rear rub lightly twice driving hard and hitting a decent bump mid corner. Nothing to worry about and that's with the standard camber and ride height.

I'd prefer a 245/40 on the 8" wheel but prices jump up heaps :(

The S402 wheels aren’t 5x100, you’ll need a PCD conversion, or just upgrade to STI hubs.

It you want a beefer look, the JDM sti wheels 18x8 are +48 offset, they filled the guards perfectly when lowered slighting on my car fitted with 235’s

Awesome. Thanks for all the info. 235 it is! My car is at standard height so scrubbing shouldn't be an issue.

Hey senator, check out this link below. It may be of extreme interest to you. I am going to buy a set. I have also confirmed this with JapanParts and Subaru of Japan themselves.
