sourcing control arm bushes

Postby LibbyMY01 » Wed May 08, 2013 4:33 pm

Hi all, After many quotes from various suspension companies I have decided that it will be worth my while to replace all the bushes ( well most) in my gen3 wagon by myself because the labour costs will kill me and I have access to all the equipment I need ( I hope). Has anyone done this themselves and has a good place to buy the parts. I am after some performance quality urethane bushes for the control arms ( all of them, lower front and rear/lateral etc) but im not sure whats worth while.

Any recommendations?
My alternate option will just be getting the parts from pedders and installing them myself!

Try to get a trade price for a bulk Whiteline order...

I'd at least inspect everything to see if it actually requires replacement though.

I've upgraded a couple of bushes (rear upper outers to camber) etc the the stockies looked just fine at 170K.
On the other hand the 2nd installed set of LCA rear bushes was just starting to tear at 50K in.

Yeah I was looking at whiteline, how would you rate their bushes in terms of handling improvements. Do they do all urethane?
I have checked the bushes and the rubber is falling apart on most of them so its a definite requirement.

With most of their products you can choose between stock replacement, upgrade or motorsport.
Owen is doing same as you with his Gen4 atm for similar reasons, to tighten everything up.

all 4 front LCA's
the rear ones were torn right through and the fronts were sloppy as Kim Kardashian.

For a road car, I prefer the bushes sourced by Michael (aka PhatGT, aka Garage88).

Much less NVH than polyurethane, but still a massive upgrade from stock.

On normal road tyres, you won't feel any performance difference.

I've only noticed a drop in NVH since putting in the poly bushes.
because the control arms are not flapping around and rattling when you go over bumps!

Awesome that's the sort of thing I was looking for. This car isn't my daily driver anyway its just a project car for some fun and a way of teaching myself how to work on a car. That's why I want poly as its not about comfort for this one ;)
Also when I got a report done on what needed replacing one of the bushes was referred to as the "Rear lower front lateral arm bush" is this just the rear lower front control arm bush? What does the lateral refer too?
And another thing how do I know what tube length as there is two different lengths for my model, what is the difference?

Check out the Whiteline site they usually have a 3d schematic of the front or rear suspension.
Failing that check out your workshop service manual.

But in this case "Rear lower front lateral arm bush"

rear end
lower arms
the front lower arms
inner (diff end) or outer bush (hub end) or both.

I have got a set of front lower alloy control arms with 4 brand new Hardrace bushes fitted, haven't been on the car since fitting the bushes, I won't be needing them anymore as the car has been sold, if you are interested pm me.
