Vehicle Standard information sheet R.T.A - N.S.W.

Postby Gen5is » Sat Nov 10, 2012 4:34 pm

Hey guys,

After lurking around multiple forums looking at different rim and tyre combinations for that perfect look, i decided to look at the rules and regulations of N.S.W. and see what i could do legally.

http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/ ... i_dl1.html
If you look at VSI09, Guidelines for alternative wheels and tyres "Wheels" Page 2 paragraph 3, It states;

"An important requirement for all replacement wheels is that the wheel track must not be increased by more than
25mm beyond the maximum specified by the vehicle manufacturer for that vehicle.
Where non original axle or suspension components are fitted, the offset of the wheel in relation to the axle or stub
axle assembly used shall not be increased by more than 12.5mm each side of the vehicle based on the specifications
of the axle components used. If an axle assembly is shortened then the track width limit is taken as the axle
manufacturers original track dimension, less the amount the assembly has been narrowed, plus 25mm."

Okay so the width wasn't my main concern, but the offset was. I got a but frustrated when i read this. Correct me if i'm wrong, but is the paragraph referring to actual wheel offset? Im not sure what they mean by axle or stub? Are they referring to the actual hub assembly (where the wheel meets the hub) or something else? Also the "shall not be increased by more than 12.5mm" sentence, does that mean that i cannot decrease (making the wheels protrude out the wheel wells) the offset by 12.5mm?

Someone please give this to me in layman's terms.. I'm having a hard time trying to understand this haha.. :(

Thanks, Eric.

Yep, that's exactly what it means.
That is the only piece of info you need to take away from that paragraph.

+45 offset is pretty common and is legal.
There are also a few +44 & +42 around and I would be surprised if they would get you for an extra 0.5mm.

Depends which suburb you're in. The retentive factor varies. ;)
I was going to procrastinate, but I put it off...

Thanks guys.

Im looking at BC Forged wheels (http://www.tigersoft.com.au/BCWheels.html), which make custom offsets. I've sent an email asking how their customisation works. They only make offsets in 5mm increments eg. 35, 40, 45. I dont know whether a +45 will sit nice and flush against the car on a 2012 Liberty (although i was told by a member on the LGT forums that it will, whilst running 235,245/40/19 tyres), i was thinking of going +40, are there any members that run +30 to +40 regardless of year model that had any problems with RTA or the law enforcement? I dont want to end up spending 3,000 only to have them sit in my garage as eye candy.

Depends on the rim width and your preference for flushness.

Track is measured from the centre of the wheel, so changes to offset affect track but rim width does not.
So you can get +45 with 7.5" rims and it will look a lot better than stock but won't really be flush (I have that measurement on my gen 4 and for me it looks good, but others prefer it to come out more).
Or you can get +45 8.5" rims that should be pretty flush (based on gen4)

Then as you said before, different width tyres will change the effect.
235s or 245s would go well on 7.5-8.5 rims (although I probably would stick to 8 and up for 245s).

Also take into consideration how low you want to go if you are lowering it.
more flushness + more low = more difficulties (that can be worked around if you want to).

However I expect you aren't going really really low if you are concerned about the legalities.

hey guys

sorry to jack your thread but i just wanted to ask a question.
i recently just got new wheels xxr 527 18x8.75 and the offset is 35 in running on 225/40/18
they are quite aggressive and sticks out on my lib 07. Would i get in trouble for this?

You'll probably should dial in some camber on that front. AFAIK, if cops pull you over and see your tyres popping outside the fender, they might defect it.

Dear OP,

If you have $3k to spend on wheels, please don't buy these.

You could easily afford (if you purchase the right way) rays, work or other very high quality Japanese wheels.

Thank you

I've already thoroughly considered other brands such as Rays, Works, Enkei, SSR, Wedssport and such.. most dont supply the 19 inch wheels in the styles i want or the PCD, Offset i can run.

For example;
Rays dont make 5 x 100 PCD for most of their 19's
Works XD9, XT7 only come in 18 inches, if they made 19's i would buy a set without a doubt
Enkei RPF1/RP09 do 19 but not the offset/PCD combination i need, they dont specify if they make custom offsets/PCD (Only +35 for 5 x 100, my limit is +42.5)
SSR they dont have the offset i need and i dont really like some of their styles, nothing about custom specs
Wedssports dont make the PCD i need, nothing on custom either

When i factor in the VSI issue with 12.5mm limitation, it further limits to what i can run on my car.. (when its even hard when trying to find nice rims that are 5 x 100 PCD, although some companys offer custom PCD, it obviously comes with extra cost) This is why i asked if anyone ran rim offsets that were more than the 12.5mm limitation and had any problems with their car passing inspection & rego or have had cops constantly harassing them. So if its something thats not really looked over or the RTA arnt that anal about then it might broaden my choice of rims.
