Hi Guys,

I have snapped my front left Bilstein & need to get a new one.
My mechanic said that he can only buy one through Subaru & that it will cost me $450.
Is there anywhere (on here or elsewhere) where I can buy one for cheaper?

These guys will be able to supply you with replacements. I have no idea if they'll sell one single strut but I'll tell you that they'll sell you a full set of 4 (delivered) for about $100 more than Subaru will sell you 1 for.

I did find the one's on ebay. I would buy them before I payed $450 for just one with no spring...
I am hoping to save some money & just buy one, but if I can't then so be it.

Which part did you snap and how did you do it?

The studs are pretty easy to snap off if you used a rattle gun on them (they're always supposed to be done up tightly by hand). If this is what you have snapped, then replacements are easy just go to a bolt shop and grab a new one. If no like then try a wrecker and grab an old strut top - heat with an oxy, hammer it out with a punch and big hammer on a bench / vice, and place into your bilstein strut top then tighten per normal and it will seat fine.

If its the centre nut/ shaft, then again how did you do this? These are pretty piss weak on the bilsteins

I'm probably going to cop some flack for the following comment, but here goes

If it's the centre nut: shaft, go to a fabricator / boilermaker who is handy with a tig welder and get it welded. Just make sure they centre it correctly and maybe even make a jig for it so it aligns without changing the angle of the shaft (as this will affect the load on the strut).

If done properly and the welds are solid, then it should be stronger than the factory casting and should cause no problems.

I'm not suggesting a dodgy fix - and again remember this is a suspension component which like all other components can fail so tread with caution here as I take no responsibility for anything going wrong here - but just throwing other options out there.

As I said I'm sure alot will disagree but I personally believe there is nothing wrong with this approach and if you have ever seen properly welded bits of metal (even load bearing items - for eg I have engine mounts and crossmembers in my other car that are welded together from various bits to make work), then you will know there is nothing wrong with the approach, only potentially the quality of the welding, which is why you need to take it to someone reputable.

Oh that's right, they're welded, because welding is fucking strong.
