Hi guys,

Its just about that time for me to switch over the tyres. I've had a flick through the forums on tyre threads but most seem to be directed at performance tyres. I however am not after a performance tyre. My primary concerns are quietness, duration and reliability. The 2.5i NA doesnt inspire massive performance . The stock bridgestones lasted me till 50-55k though which i am very satisfied with and hope to match with the new set.

I would go for the stock ones again but $360 is a little pricey! Has anyone got any other recommendations?

I was in the same boat, needed a good tyre for normal commuting quiet and long lasting.

I was put onto Zetum Sport tyres by my mate who owns a Bob Jane. They are made by Kuhmo and near identical pattern to the KU31.

Theyre quiet, grippy and after 10,000kms dont look to have worn at all. I paid $600 for the 4 fitted.

I'll buy them again.

+1 in no way need a performance tyre either & had them fitted, balanced & aligned for $656. I'll also be buying them again

how do these long lasting/ quiet tyres stack up for braking performance/ wet performance?
you're going to be more likely to have a smash on your daily commute when some middle aged woman in a Prado swerves into your lane and stops in front of you. (it's gonna be your fault because you hit her from behind, so your cheap tyres now cost you a $500 insurance claim)

i can get the ABS working in the dry with my RE050A's i'd hate to see how easily it's activate with the sh!t Sumitomo's i used to have on my forester on the Lib.

I had some cheapies ($80 a corner) put on my wife's Toyota Starlet at the advice of my local tyre shop as the car only does the 20km commute to work and back. Took them back after a week as they wouldn't stop in the dry, wouldn;t turn in the wet and the sidewalls gave way when braking/ turning at the same time, and it's only a 900kg car.
i paid the difference ($15 a corner) for some yoko's, and they re-fitted/ balanced and aligned them for free.
happy times and it feels like a new car, but they're still quiet and comfortable

Just throwing some extra considerations out there.

Continental or Michelin

If you are buying tyres that last a long time, make sure you buy some that aren't complete death traps for the second half of their life. Most cheapies are, plus they aren't that quiet any more either!

Companies like Kumho, Hankook and Falken have shown that just about anyone can make a decent performance tyre, but it's still those two Europeans who lead the world in tyres that fulfill your stated goal.

Even a bottom of the range Michelin will shit all over a no name piece of rubbish after the first 20,000km has been and gone.

Ive had no problems at all with braking performance and wet handling. I like these far better than the Pirelli P Zero Neros previously.

Just to let you guys know i ended up going with Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2's. They had a deal on at $187 a corner which seemed to be the best price-performance ratio.

Can't agree more. I run the best tyres possible on my daily driver for that exact reason. 10,000Kms less life is a worthwhile tradeoff for increased safety.

A bloody good choice IMO. As long as they aren't too old (check the manufacture date on the sidewall for confirmation) anything made before 2009 will be quite old by the time you wear them out

I couldn't find the date written on the sidewall however the asymmetric 2 model was only released in australia in july this year. Im assuming they wouldnt have been manufactured that long ago if they were released for sale a few months ago.

Cant go wrong with Bridgestone Adrenaline Potenzas!

I really like Yoko S-drives. Spend a lil extra on your tyres and you will never regret it.

I have had 2 x sets of Michelin XM1's on my Forester for around 55 - 60,000Kms each, they are quiet on the road and have good grip in both wet & dry conditions.
My current set are due for replacement at around Dec - Jan given the current rate of wear and I'll definitely be looking at another set unless I can be convinced that Continental are a better tyre.
