If it is completely torn through the lca can bounce around against the body and mounting racket.

Had the car checked out today, was told I need to replace both wheel bearings. I still have a hunch it may be the CV though.

Sounds nothing like wheel bearings to me, they make a whirring noise at cruise speeds.

Best way to check a wheel bearing is to crouch down, grasp the tyre and push/pull the wheel. If its a wheel bearing you should easy see/feel some play.

A cv joint can wear out without a boot being split, it'd be worth pulling apart your outer cv joints and checking them for any damage, if all is well clean it up, whack new grease in and put it back together. It is very rare for inner joints to make a noise, because of their design they seem to last longer than the outer joints.
