It looks to hav been a while since we discussed this...

I am running Falken 452's on 18" rb wheels now and they are going to be up soon... I previously, have run goodyear F1 gsd3 adn gsd2 on other cars and found both to be good. Turanza somthing or other on the work commode wagon were shite as were the sp sport dunlops on hire falcons... Both were treacherous in the wet. The f1 (in both iterations) has been the best tyre I have ever driven on. I prize wet performance more than anything, and cornering wet or dry next. I think that most high performance tyres do alright on braking wet or dry... I liked the very high level of grip, and the early notice that the f1's gave, they didn't immediatly give up, but they left it to the last minute, then got (squirelly- not a word so how do you spell it!!) but all really understandable...

The question posed- based on the lack of unbiased info (other than wheels tyre tests ?) what have you actually found good, and please base this on a number of good tyres you owned...

I don't mean to dis the younger members, but saying that you think a tyre is good is not the idea here, I'm looking( as I think several if not most others are) for 1st hand experience with tyres.

The re050 is standard for most of us, what did you change to, and was it better. (I never got to drive on the 050...)

Is the re010? (is that it) better? what about the others...

Maxis is on the missus gt foz, this is good for a cheapie... What do you have.

I'm using Hankook K110, pretty good. Much better than the K104s.

Not as good as the Z212 in terms of grip, but they sure last a lot longer! :P

Probably better/comparable to the RE050a, and similar to the RE001s from what I've heard.

I have had RE050A's & RE001;s (Adrenalins)

The 050A is the better tyre, its quieter and more predictable, (my personal vice is dry cornering) The 001 is good value for money (a set can be had for ~$1k on the 17's) I guess one thing you need to take into account, whats your budget!

the RE050's are a good tyre its a pity the RE070's doesnt come in 18's cos they are a superiour tyre imo.

Some guys over here in SA have had good results with the silverstone brand.

I'm also a fan of the RE050, I swapped to Pirelli P-Zero Rosso's and I don't think they have quite the bite the 050's had, they're a little more vague on turn in. I give them a pretty hard time though and they seem to be holding up OK. Someone give us a report of the Maragnocchi's ;)

I'm currently on Silverstone FTZ Sports Evol 8.. yes long ass name for a tyre.

Was very skeptical at first as they were recommended by my mechanic brother and found out that they were a Malaysian brand. haven't done any prolonged hard driving on them but must admit they are a pretty good tyre for the price.. good amount of grip, low noise, good all round feel while driving.. seem okay in the wet, but i havent really pushed it yet. good tyre, but not the greatest i've been on.

In answer to suffs question- budget? Within reason anything. But having said that- to get me to spend an extra $200+ more than another tyre I'd want to be really convinced that they are heaps better...

Value for money is the priority, but I won't be compromising too much on the performance.

Anything I go for would need to be as good as the 452's on it now...

But tyres are a real black art... They should have demo tyres you can use to test... :roll:

I've had 2 sets of eagle F1's and although they gripped really well in the wet and dry they were loud and wore out quite quickly on the FWD turbo we had at the time.
then we moved onto some re030's on the 2.0L and they weren't outstanding but by the same token never let me down in the dry or wet. they did get a little skatey under pressure once they were a bit worn down though.
we then bought the gt which came with re050's and i thought they were excellent in all conditions although i would have preferred something a bit more appropriate at wakefield :lol: ... like some re070's or even the pirelli's i now have the 2.0L.
these are zero nero's and i think they are better than any other tyre i've had. like MIB mentioned they do feel very different to the bridgestones on turn-in but you just learn to do that a little more agressively and you get rewarded because they really will take you where you want to go. another awesome characteristic is the sraight line stopping ability. in a rough test i did one night they took me from 100 to 0 in 37 strides (told you it wasn't terribly scientific :lol: ) and felt solid as a rock doing it in that i was braking without locking up or activating the abs. i hope my next set on the GT are either the zero nero's or something like michelin pilot sport's. i don't think i'd be dissapointed if we just replaced the 050's though.
I spend most of my money on booze, fast cars and women, I just waste the rest...

Tyres so far for me.

Bridgestone RE050A (17")- Fantastic tyre wet or dry, only went away from these because of the price and I do like to try new things :D

Kumho Ecsta KU31 (17")- Great value for money, not as grippy as the 050 and slightly noisier. More compliant side wall so slower turn in and better overall comfort.

Goddyear Eagle F1 (17")- Horrible, noisy pieces of sh!t. Can't remember any redeeming features about these tyres, removed them after only a few thousand klm's.

Falken FK452 (18")- Good value for money tyre. This size (215 40 18) I thought rode a little harsh in the Liberty when it had the king springs on it but they did grip well, wet or dry and not very noisy. (These could be the tyres you are about to replace :D )

Falken FK452 (18")- Again great value. this size (225 40 18) made a massive difference to the ride comfort. Grip really well in the wet and dry although when they let go in the wet in can be a little sudden, especially with standard suspension that doesn't give much feedback. I really rate these Falken's and feel that for the money they are hard to beat.

Rich, I'm thinking of going back down to 17" wheels again so........ remember those Enkei's i put on my car not so long ago?? Well they could be for sale with tyres of ur interested, even have a spare to go with them with a brand new tyre.......PM if interested.

Adam- you have reminded me about the wear rate- I had forgotten. I think I got 25k out of the last set! I was hoping for closer to 40k... I don't want bakelite tyres the go for 70k... :?

I do quite like the 452's, but it's interesting that the pirrelli's are getting the big nod...

And you have to think that the f1's have come out of two different factories to get such differing opinions of them... Mine were never noisy, and the performance was brilliant. The wear sucked... It's like there is a jap f1 and a korean f1...

The maxis I had rates as a good cheapie too, but I'm looking for beter this time...

yokohama s drives, great value for money 19 225/35 tyre and awesome in the rain.

Other people have obviously had the same experience as me, as it is now top of the ultra high performance list on tirerack

as for the F1's i had the short tread pattern and would imagine that the long would probably sound and wear differently.
and as for the pirelli's i've only done about 4-6 thousand on them so wear rate is not an issue yet. i do give them a HEAP of grief though. i actually think that i do it deliberatly because for some unfathomable reason i didn't think much of the brand before.. (don't ask because i don't know :roll: )
i have to tell you that barring some alignment issues with 2 of my re050's that i replaced the other (original) 2 have done about 39k and still have some life left.

i've actually heard that they used to be made in germany and then they started making them in indonesia... i'm sure that if i'm wrong someone will correct me though :lol:

from what you've said it sounds like re001's might be just the ticket for you.

After 15k they're still quite comfortable and quiet to ride on. Grip is still excellent as cornering is quite effortless. Still a great value for the price!

dont you mean marangoni's, i was going to buy them but picked up a set of re50a's cheap. i believe they got tyre of the year from some motor magazine....i was quoted $220 each fitted compared to $300 for the re50a's...shane
