Which brake fluid?

Postby SH30RB » Thu Jul 26, 2012 5:48 pm

Its that particular time for my car to get a major service done, and im taking a different approach to most by purchasing my own lubricants/oils and parts

as far as brake fluid goes, obviously DOT4 is the aussie standard but i've seen quite a few post on here with people recommending DOT5.1
im planning on installing upgraded pads and rotors in the near future

should i go ahead and purchase some DOT5.1 or should i not waste my money and go with DOT4?

Cheers guys, Simon

You can pick up some AP Racing 5.1 for about $20 for 500mls from Race Brake Australia

http://www.racebrakessydney.com.au/index.html

Just bear in mind 5.1 does require more regular changes if you are tracking the car.

Use the best fluid you can afford to change REGULARLY.

Not the emphasis on the second criteria.

i do it at 20-30K intervals

I do changes at the factory specified intervals, although my car has had a few sets of brakes on it so its probably been flushed 4 times in the last 2 years which is about every 3000kms.

My cars see no hard driving though.

Autobarn has Dot 4 fluid for under $7 a 500ml bottle. It will be fine. Rather than spend a fortune on a bottle it is better to spend the dollars on frequent changes because brake fluid is hygroscopic and as it absorbs moisture it's boiling point drops significantly
