Well 5 months and 13,000 km later, I have replaced the rotors and pads. I just went with T2 rotors and QFM HPX pads, all up with brake fluid $746. Was super easy and it seems all good. In combination with the LCA bush replacement all shudders, grinding and pulsing is gone (that sounds dirty!)
Interestingly after 163,000 km the pads that came out had probably 30% pad left and no big gouges in the discs, so I can only guess that the original discs were warped, but I can't explain the grinding sound...maybe glazed because of the warpped disc. I'd be interested in your opinions on it...

Thanks for everyones help and encouragement to do it myself, it feels satisfying to save $300 and do it myself. I've already spent the savings though. Damd steering wheel on it's way from Japan
