USDM / AUDM suspension interchangability

Postby GTbee » Wed Jan 04, 2012 6:10 am

Will any USDM 4th gen Legacy springs and shocks fit our 4th gen Liberties? I'm looking at ordering springs and want to be sure there are no fitment issues, for example the JDM Teins not fitting the AUDM Liberties.

I'm looking at getting Epic springs, which according to the LegacyGT site are rebranded Eibach Pros, and  have the same spring rate and drop. According to the above forum, the Eibachs for the 4gen are being discontinued.

Doesn't anyone know? :?:

Stuff in the US is a lot cheaper and I just want to be sure if whatever I order will fit etc etc

They will fit, but the drop height might be different.

There was a issue with the JDM tein s tech springs a while ago like this one.
The drop height was completely different when the JDM tein s techs where install on AUD lib.

Phat Gt sells the AUD spec tein s techs for around $450 I think. (someone please correct me if this price isn't even close)
35mm drop, about as firm as a stock wrx, great buy.
These are designed for the billie struts though.

I currently have Phat's Tein S-Techs but I want to change to Eibach Pros or H&Rs. I require somewhat less ridehight drop and stiffness.

Are you finding the s techs too firm?

Depending on the road, they can be too firm. They are quite OK at other times.

Furthermore car is too low at rear and I don't want to use spacers.

They are the two reasons people get turned off them. I'm considering coilovers as I don't think s techs are quite firm enough.

But yes the rear is to low with the s techs, trying spacers out in the next few weeks to see how they go.

What where your reasons for not wanting to put spacers in?

I feel the suspension travel at the rear is now insufficient and that with a major bump the car will bottom out. I have to angle my fingers upward to fit between the tyre and top of the rear guard. Spacers will only solve my issues cosmetically.

Well said, :). I also wish the ride height was much more even between front n rear. Good luck with your spring swap.

GTbee: have you investigated cutting your rear bumpstops to help with the travel issue?
I'm considering epic bumpstops or similar for the fronts if they're a little shorter and firmer...

No. At the end of the day the springs were just a bit too low (and in front too) and stiff for my liking and I removed them.

I installed the US spec Epic Engineering springs which are supposed to be rebranded Eibachs. No issues with fitment or ride height. The ride height front and rear is a tiny bit lower than stock but slightly higher than the ride height of others on this forum who have installed the Phat edition Tiens.

Handling has returned to around stock RB levels as the springs are taller and softer and more progressive but I sort of expected that but the car is far easier to live with. I'm finding the car does initially lean more in corners than I would like due to the progressive nature of the springs, despite having the Cusco sway bars, and there is some pitch and lack of control etc when making some rapid turns of directions. I think the Cuscos are better matched with firmer suspension. Having said that overall the car is still quite good for now.

I'm thinking that perhaps I should have got Swift springs instead as they may have been midway between these springs and the Epics in terms of firmness and ride height.

Next year I will do what I should have done from day one - get some quality coilovers. I'm not going to muck around and I will get Ohlins. I now know more about what Coilovers are all about and what they are capable of how and they can be fine tuned etc.

They are pricey but considering the costs of parts and and labour etc of getting new Wheelpower Bilsteins and two sets of springs which aren't quite right, I would have been better off committing to one large expense and having the car's suspension exactly how I want it.
