Coilover reassembly tips and tricks?

Postby bigBADbenny » Tue Jul 10, 2012 3:12 pm

I've sourced all the the spare parts for rebuilding/reassembling my BC V1 fronts to as-new spec.
Apparently I just put it all together in the right order, add 5-10mm of preload to the springs, lightly nip up the lockrings when: the coilovers are on the car, ride height is set, weight is on the wheels... And of course get it all aligned!

Are there any other tips and tricks regarding: anti seize, thread lube or locktite, dust boots, bumpstops, or the adjustable camber plates?
Everything required was refurbished (camber plates) or replaced (top bearings, adjusters, top nut, nylon spring seats, boots & bumpstops) with new from the BC disty Just Jap.

Looking for arcane advice like "locktite the camber bolts" "zip tie the dust boots" "use this lube not that" "apply a little black silicone to the spring seats".
Otherwise I'll just do 'em up, install and enjoy! Tips, tricks and advice most welcome! :D :D

+1 here.

Was really thinking some might be able to add a few "ninja" tricks to installing coilovers. Never heard of putting silicone on the spring seats but a little smear could reduce NHV affects, so might give it a shot myself soon.

Would only add, torque everything, drive 50-100kms then torque it all again. Oh and add a little grease to the bearing under the camber plates before assembling.

Anyone else??? :?:

Wonderful!
I totally made up that silicone on the seats bit.
In the meantime I found all the required info on the Megan Racing website. 8)

So how about suspension nuts and bolts?
The recommendations I've seen for using anti seize are from the USA sites where winters are harsh with salted roads and so on.
Do I need to use anti seize or just moly/chassis grease?

Also, is a $50 torque wrench acceptable?

Sounds like ur complicating things Ben, keep it simple, if the bolts come out with color on them that will be thread locker, clean the old crap off and use a small drop

Where are u getting the torque specs? I wouldn't use them I just do them up to where I thing they need to be depending on bolt size

Ahhh just some n00b paranoia is all. Cheers, any advice is great!

To do the top bolt up, the one holding the camber plate bearing on, it's 60ft/lb via an allen key holding the shaft top with a ring spanner on the 17mm nut!
I guess 60ft/lb is like "medium tight"
My high-end bicyle mechanic mate will have a torque wrench that takes allen keys.

Put together, fit up. No anti-seize or loctite on anything.

Theres no special tricks.

Even the top bolt, just do it up really tight by hand. No real need for a torque wrench. Dont overthink it mate.
