Struts dead

Postby jimmygt07 » Mon Jan 17, 2011 12:39 pm

Have been searching on here and found a couple of posts on here about clunking and noises coming from the front end of others libs.

I have just had the car in at c n j motor sports and they seem to think it's the front left strut that is dead or very near it.

I don't have an issue replacing it at all my question or delimmar is do I just get in contact with Paul from tyre power to get a complete new set of billies for $550 or do I use this opportunity to upgrade? Or just get the ones I have rebuilt?

I haven't got a clue where to start so looking for help or suggestions.

Thanks guys

I'd probably suggest buying a new set to install
then have the old ones re-build and sell them for the cost of a re-build (plus a little to recoup the original outlay)
someone else may be in the same situation.
i know that i'd be happy to pay a little more than just the re-build cost for the convenience of not being without a set.

I have a feeling mine are on their way out too. You might be able to answer for your experience, were yours very noisy over bumps? I.e, When i hit a small pot hole it makes a gigantic BANG and you think you've blown your tires off your rims haha. And even small bumps tend to be rather noisy, not necessarily "bangs" but just noisy in general.

could also be the loose strut top nut that many have come across. May not be but is worth checking

Carl something sounds very wrong with your suspension if you are experiencing loud bangs. First thing I would put it down to is a loose top hat etc.

You could also do the old rebound test. Push down on each corner of the car and see how it rebounds, if it goes up and down and up etc it's definitely shot, a good shock should only go up and a very slight down if any.

Hey guys thanks for the posts,

Robbks - Thanks mate was thinking this also sounds like a good idea!

Woodduck - I didn't hear anything much it just started all of a sudden and not when going over bumps its more when braking cornering and accelerating. I thought it may have been a CV but the mechanic doesn't think this is the case.

Smythie - I checked that first to ensure that this could be fixed easily and quickly its nice and tight and doesn't show any signs of movement.

Q - was thinking this also can you suggest any in particular? I am thinking i will go with a new set from wheelpower so will definately let you know when they are removed and replaced.

I can only comment on what I bought which is a set of racecomp KW tarmac 1 coilovers. Ride quality is better than the bilsteins I had on previously and the ability to adjust the height to just where i want it is great. And obviously it handles alot better too :) (I"ve also changed the rear spring rate with a set of 9.0kg swift springs).
The only drawback is that they are a little more expensive than the shocks from tyrepower

I have this exact issue. Turns out my front bushes were shot as were my strut top bearings. The shocks themselves were fine.

Check the strut tops definately, also the head mechanic at subaru here said when the bilstein libs strut top bolts have a habbit of just coming loose. But id imagine if you have been through a mechanic they should have checked that.
But its my strut tops that are the issue apparently.

Thanks Matt

I have checked on the tops and they are super tight not budging at all. :assassin:

I will more than likely take it into subaru and get them to diagnose it properly as i don't want to have to fork out money where its not necessary. :D

Taking the car up to Subaru on Monday for them to diagnose it fully.
