Summer FMIC's

Thinking about when I owned my MY02 B4. The only thing that ever really bothered me was the cars computers willingness to shut down my turbo in heat in the mid 40's.

Now I have a 2009 GTBR I was wondering if anyone knew if the oem TMIC had solved this problem?

If so I'll leave it, if not I thought perhaps I'd pay someone to install a FMIC, as long as it could either be painted black to blend in or if there was another way to make it look fairly stock.

Never had a problem with my car in summer. I think it was just your car.

It's possible there may have been an issue. Sitting in Melbourne traffic with the A/C on over 45 degree's, I'd only notice it when finally being able to enter the freeway & there being nothing under foot but the naturally aspirated part. Also occurred in SA when cruising on the freeway at 47degrees with the A/C on.

Assumed perhaps it was just a limitation of the OEM TMIC.

But B4s ping all the time Shane, so there's no need to pull timing for increased temps.

In all seriousness there are two compensations that can reduce performance when IAT is high, as well as the fact that the air is just plain less dense.

There is a boost compensation that from memory the factory tune has zero'd out at high IAT. Can't remember, because I've changed it.

Then there's the timing compensation which will reduce timing advance from the base by about 2deg if temps get much over 30C.

A front mount cooler will give you denser air, but won't make any difference to the compensations, because IAT is stupidly measured before the turbo.

Your knock sensor probably went nuts and dropped your IAM, resulting in it feeling like a slug.

I'd just install a FMIC, they look the part

My wrx had no issue with the standard tmic in summer. I had a tilt mod on the IC and installed a water spray kit for summer.

John does that tilt mod work on Lib's, I remember telling my brother to do it on his 99 WRX but he never did, $5 mod for some decent gains

Also how expensive would a water spray kit cost to fit on an MY07 GT approx?

so we're saying here the outside temperature was one factor but not the only one?

FMIC for the win! :) more powah! Having said that tmic is easier and cheaper but prone to heatsoak when stationary only once your on the move with a waterspray kit and a decent aftermarket top mount your ok.

Based on what Tony's saying perhaps focus on getting cool air to the MAF/IAT sensor, since anything you do after that i.e. FMIC etc isn't going to be measured by the ECU.

but it may help resist detonation (through having possibly cooler denser intake air) so it wouldn't be wasted.

Not sure on the tilt mod for libs, can't see why not. Mine was free, got some stainless bar drilled as a favour

Water spray cost... I'd say around $40 I could do it for. Fittings from bunnings and a wiper bottle with motor from the wreckers

Okay thanks John, I'll have to talk to you more about it at the next meet!

Defnately. It's quite simple to set up really. Hardest part is finding a place to put the switch

Don't use a manual switch.

Use a pressure switch and relay and spray for 5 seconds when a certain level of boost is reached.

I've built many and this works best.
