Petrol warning on 4GEN Liberty a bit conservative?

Postby tch » Sun Apr 25, 2010 11:06 am

Stupid question, but anyone find that the warning for petrol if pretty conservative and push it when it comes to delaying filling up? :)

It's got a 64litre tank but I find if I fill up after driving for say, 10-30km after it switches from "60" to "--, and it still has around 8-10litres left in the tank gauging by the fact I fill it up with 54-56 litres at the pump.

Mine comes on at about 10L + the 5L which is below the readable amount on the gauge, so it is basically 15L in the tank when the light comes on.

I think it's good that it comes on early, since at 15L there is a very real risk of fuel surge if cornering hard.

yeah, i found the same thing when i went through my first tank... it cam on with about 80kms (prob 8-10 litres) left in the tank..

just takes a little getting used to.

i have also found that if you fill up when only partially through a tank full; the 'km to empty' gague doesnt reset properly..

In my pre-face lifted GT, it went all the way down to 20kms before reading "---". At this point I would generally get approx 57L into the tank... But I did at one stage get as much as 61L.

Most petrol gauges in modern cars seem to read a similar way. Some are worst then others mind you (Case & point MY08-MY09 Ralliart Lancer - Reads completely empty but still has 9-10L left in the tank... When the tank is only 55L that is a bit too safe).

I got a bit of fuel surge last week ... and the warning light was not on.

If the light comes on, you should get fuel immediately.

You wll get a different figure every time you fill up, as it is based on the average consumption for the last 50-100 km.
That can vary quite a bit, depending upon if you've been doing more freeway kms, or stop/start recently.
