Noisy engine when cold

Hi all,

A couple of weeks ago I picked up an MY07 tuned by sti. I've noticed that when starting up from cold, it's *much* louder, for maybe 30 seconds, then suddenly quietens down. It sounds exactly like a lack of oil (or oil pressure) which some cars do at startup, only this goes on for much too long for that to be it. Is this a common thing with these engines, or do I have a problem?

Cheers,
Adam

there's a tiny air pump in there which only kicks in when engine doing a cold start

it's for emission purposes.

so the noise is normal and nothing to worry about.

i had the same query when i bought my car and had queried it.

hope this helps.

:)

If you listen closely with or without the bonnet open after 30 seconds or thereabouts you'll hear that pump stop with a little "phew" type sound and it will all be quiet again.

See if this helps, MRT Video
You will see Brett eventually talk about the air pump on the left hand side of the engine bay.
