Whining Noise coming from Engine Bay

Postby CheesyMong » Sun Oct 04, 2009 10:52 pm

Hi Guys

Can anyone else tell me if there car has the same issue...

When you turn the key to the acc on point so all the electronics power up etc...but before the engine starts does anyone else get like a whining noise coming from the engine bay right under the top mount IC or somewhere near there.

Only noticed the noise today so I do not know if it has been there all along or anyone know what it could be?

Cheers

Don't know what it is but I got it too. Always been there from the start so I don't think it's an indication of something gone wrong. :D

Wonder if it's the HID ballasts charging up?

Don't think so as I had the acc turned on for about 10 minutes while doing some carpc work

Think legacygt mentioned ignition motor or something like that?

Yup, I hear this faintly as you describe. And also hear it after I park the car and turn engine off. Slight whining followed by some clicking and ticking. Could it be the turbo just timing/cooling down?

You sure it's not coming from the passenger seat? :assassin:

I'm pretty sure mine has a bit of noise just before I start it (fuel pump etc), can't say I've paid that much attention because it hasn't sounded out of the ordinary though. If I remember and if nobody else has confirmed by then, I'll check it this afternoon when I go home for the day.

Its not anything to worry about its a solenoid to a) open a fuel line or b) open an air inlet valve.

if the solenoid doesnt open the car wont start, hence why you cant start the car before this whining noise.

Might be way off mark, but I get a similarly describable sound in my rex that coincides with the airbag light going on then off.

Eventhought the noise will not disappear even after 10mins, I.m guesingg the solenoid just stays open until the car starts?

If its not the solenoid that you are talking about, it could just be a pump..(fuel or power steering) if need be have the car checked at your next service, or compare it with others with the same car at the next liberty.asn meet.

While we are talking about noises, does anyone get a whirring noise when coasting?

I notice this more when coasting in an underground carpark..sounds like a hissing whir emanating from wheel base. Could it be the proximity of the brembo's to the rims causing air friction?

I confirmed the whining noise from engine bay this morning by the way. did it with several ignition on's.

some funny answers and questions....interesting

acc no noises should be heard from anywhere except your stereo

on but not started you will have solenoids and fuel pump powered so yes you will hear some noise from under rear seat and engine bay

Weird I know but it appears a lot of the post face lift libs make a whining noise when on the acc setting...Even the US Legacy's appear to do it as well.

It was freaking me out cuase I thought there was something wrong...

On ACC maybe a fan in the amp under the passenger seat? Maybe a CD in the CD player?

The fuel pump comes on with the ignition turned on; most fuel injected cars are the same. It also gives it a quick squirt of fuel to prime it so please don't turn your key on and off repeatedly because it will a)flood it, b)dilute the oil and c)throw unburnt fuel through the turbo... That's why they say please don't ever use accelerator to start, it will also give the poor ole turbo a gut full of unburnt fuel followed closely by a large, terrifying sound and you're wallet may be 'en-lightened'...

It also runs though a self-diagnostics check where it will examine a few systems (ABS, airbag, fluid levels etc) during which it will make some clicking and popping noises. Also, if the A/C is on the condenser fan will be running.

GT-B.
If you knew...
