27,153 km's and need a new clutch..

Starts slipping on the dyno at about 200kW..

Will try for warrantee, but I wont be holding my breath at all.. Will probably end up costing about $1,200 for heavy duty clutch..

I'm not that surprised.

Bloke on OZFOZ replaced his at about 35,000 after running his at about 180 kwaw.

His front tyres were replaced even earlier than that.

Mate, not having a dig here but:
Good luck with warranty...
I would recommend a standard clutch, unless you want to be going in for warranty on driveshafts soon too.
Depending on your relationship with your dealer, you might be asked to not return for any warranty issues re: driveline.
Your best bet would be to make your relationship grow and take part responsibility for the issue.

Tread carefully...

My tuner has a few track cars, one is a WRX STi with six speed and same clutch and he has about 200Nm more torque and more power and its around the 100,000km mark with no issues so far.. He is pretty close to the manager at one of the Subaru dealerships and he tells me is should be under warrantee.. If its not, I am not too fussed.. I will let him sort it out.. When I look at how much I have spent on the car and on mods I am not going to loose any sleep over spending another $1,200 on a clutch if need be.. I don’t really have the time or patients to fight the matter.. If its under warrantee and they can't do it early next week I will probably go the heavy duty clutch option anyways.. Mechanical repairs are tax deductible..

Most of my driving is HWY or stuck in stop start traffic.. The only time I get up it is out in the hinterland and I have never dropped the clutch in any gear.. Buttt I have gone through a couple of sets of tyres and a set of brake pads in less than 30,000km so maybe it is the way I drive.. Oh well I didn’t buy the Liberty STi to drive it like an old lady…

"Your best bet would be to make your relationship grow and take part responsibility for the issue." I have zero respect or time for Subaru dealerships as it is.. I will buy cars of them but that’s about it, I wont even take my car into them for services anymore.. I have been to a couple of dealerships in my area and they are all the same.. Pretty useless.. My whole family has Subaru's.. They are awesome cars but in the rare occasion something goes wrong, it’s a waste of time going back to the dealer.. They have had my mothers (stock) liberty in the shop for over two months now.. For a problem they said they could fix in a week.. She has had to cover the costs of a hire car.. There was zero taking responsibility for the issue on their behalf..

They also damaged my front bar.. I had had the car for a week and dropped it back of at the dealership for GPS fitment.. They had the car for two months while I was overseas and I came back to a busted front bar.. Again there was zero taking responsibility for the issue on their behalf..

Hi Adam
No big suprise here mate and thus the reason I started this thread a while back. viewtopic.php?f=18&t=5512&hilit=clutch

I like your attitude because you got to pay if your going to play.

Let us know how you go and which one you get.

I know of two liberty with about 250+ kw atw, and both a running OEM clutches with no issues at all……

Surely they'd be members of a forum (Not necessarily this one) and have dyno run sheets showing this...

Dyno sheets or it didn't happen.

Standard clutches start to go with 170+ atw depending on use and abuse. Even stock STI's come back to our workshops with blown clutches after 20,000. Be careful, Subaru Australia do trawl forums, if not this one, it will be another one.

There is one fellow with 245 atw on OZFOZ who is running a standard clutch but he nurses his car and enjoys driving it.

Yes you have an STI, that's good news, but have you nearly doubled its power from factory?

I have to agree, you want to play, you have to pay....

Anything more than an exhaust and you have to be ready blow money on other parts.

There are number of different dyno's and tuners being used by members here and the results vary wildly. Also you will note when you see some these dyno results that the tuner chooses to do the power runs in 4th gear for 6 speed rather than 5th gear. Not saying they are bad tunes or anything like that but rather the numbers are a bit deceiving.

"I know of two liberty with about 250+ kw atw, and both a running OEM clutches with no issues at all……"

My tuner said the same thing..

"Be careful, Subaru Australia do trawl forums, if not this one, it will be another one."

Most of the mods I have on my car are pretty obvious, they will pretty much instantly know that the car is not standard, they shouldn’t need to trawl forums to find this out..

"There is one fellow with 245 taw on OZFOZ who is running a standard clutch but he nurses his car and enjoys driving it."

I know how I drive and I like to give it a squirt often enough, but I don’t thrash my car.. I don't try and spin the wheels.. I don’t race people off at the lights.. I don’t drop the clutch in any gear.. When ever I plant my foot I am already moving.. I drive about 350km a week.. Over 200 of these is on the HWY with cruise control on.. I personally don’t think my clutch should go with less then 30,000 on the clock, even with the power it has based on the driving I do.. If Subaru dosen't agree, such is life.. If it were up to me I wouldn't even bother calling them up to begin with..

Doing the power runs in 4th gear in the 6th speed manual gives a more accurate comparative power figure than using 5th gear when comparing the 5 and 6 speed manual models.. There is only 4.5% increase in the relative power reading in 4th gear.. If you were to use 5th gear you are looking at a 18% decrease in the relative power reading..

6-speed manual transmission Yes -
Gear ratio - 1st 3.636
Gear ratio - 2nd 2.235
Gear ratio - 3rd 1.521
Gear ratio - 4th 1.137
Gear ratio - 5th 0.891

Gear ratio - 6th 0.707

5-speed manual transmission Yes -
Gear ratio - 1st 3.454
Gear ratio - 2nd 2.062
Gear ratio - 3rd 1.448
Gear ratio - 4th 1.088
Gear ratio - 5th 0.825

No comparing 6MT to 5 speed auto here. Also there are a number of variables such as difference shoot out modes available with various dynos. There are tuners out there that know this and use it to make the numbers look better than they really are. Also some tuners will do the power runs with the bonnet up and fan on vs bonnet down with fan on. Variations in temp will get you wildly fluctuating numbers.

Pick your gear and work it out
6-speed manual transmission Yes -
Gear ratio - 1st 3.636
Gear ratio - 2nd 2.235
Gear ratio - 3rd 1.521
Gear ratio - 4th 1.137
Gear ratio - 5th 0.891
Gear ratio - 6th 0.707

1/4 mile time is the best way to measure exactly what your making.

Also Hub V's Roller dyno & humidity, air temperature (time of day).. I am not too interested in the ultimate power figures my car puts out. I more so see it as a good tool to get the best possible use of my mods.. I am not even too concerned with 1/4 mile times (I am yet to put it down the straight).. A car that has super low quarter miles times doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a good street daily driver.. I was pretty much at a point where I completely happy with the mods I had, and the drivability of the car and I had no plans to go any further. I told my tuner that I wanted an awesome daily driver not a 1/4 mile or track car.. I think if we were interested in super high dyno figures or super low 1/4 miles times we would have bought 10 year old WRX's and modded the hell out of them with the money we saved from not buying Liberties..

4th gear auto V's 6speed manual..

4th gear in 6 speed - 13.7% higher reading than 4th gear in auto..
5th gear in 6 speed- 10.9% lower reading than 4th gear in auto..

Either way you will be out a fair bit.. Guess you can't compare apples with oranges..

Oh I see what your comparing now :)
Couldn't agree with you more on good street tune over drag/dyno queen tune. Ive owned a couple of wrx sti's previously and there is no way I would go back to it.

Three weeks ago on a hub dyno at night with bonnet open, fan on I net 180 kw atw.
This past Saturday on a roller dyno with bonnet closed, fan on. First two runs were in around 136 kw then for the third run they spray the i/c with water while fan is on and I get 145 kw..go figure.

I believe one has lasted 2 years and the other is not far behind, both have spent a far bit of time on the dyno, with no recorded slippages.

yep I dont doubt it but after two years with the power upgrades it is more than likely that some slippage will start to occur. The clutch is your weakest link for a reason.
