Anyone know their stuff about oils?

Postby Mo_GT » Tue Aug 11, 2009 10:12 pm

Time for a service and i'm considering usuing the following oils:

Motul 300v 5W-30 (been using this oil since first service) or might switch to the Chrono 10w-40

Gear oil - Motul Gear 300 75W90

Rear Diff - Motul PA 90

Thoughts? Opinions? Recomendations?

:)

I've always been happy with Motul stuff.
Been using the Gear 300 in 2 cars for a fair while now, going to drain them and goo with "AndrewTech's Cocktail" (off NASIOC) which is 1l of Motul Gear300 and the rest (2.5l or so) of Redline Light Weight Shock Proof.

Also use the Gear300 in the rear diff of both cars too, no problems there either.

Another option is that Subaru just released a MT gear oil, part number SAS1049 - RRP is $131.50, not cheap but it is 5l, so enough to do the rear diff too.
Here's a blurb about it;
Subaru Premium Manual Transmission Fluid 5L
Subaru Premium Manual Transmission Fluid is a fully synthetic, wide viscosity span 75W-90 GL5, automotive gear oil. Designed specifically for Subaru vehicles which provides excellent low temperature properties to ensure that bearings, gears and seals receive proper lubrication.

Particularly suitable for high performance Subaru vehicles such as the Impreza WRX, Impreza WRX STi and Liberty GT.

As for engine oil, im currently using the Castrol Edge 5w30 syn (Subaru sell it in the silver bottles) in one car and German Castrol 0w30 syn in the other, happy with both, but thinking about changing to Redline 5w40 next change - when its abit warmer outside.

Have you looked at http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/ - these people are freeks and know EVERYTHING about oil's.
Do a search for Legacy GT oil reports etc, and see what oils perform the best in these engines - I think I remember most people/engines liking Shell Rotella.

I would not put that in the rear diff. I'll bet my left nut that what you are buying is Syntrax with a Subaru sticker on the bottle and Syntrax shouldn't be used in an lsd.

It also costs a LOT less straight from Castrol.

Thanks for the comments guys. I didn't think of using the gear 300 75w90 in the rear diff and looks like the owners manual says that that weight is fine for the diff too! makes it a little easier for me too.

I will be sticking to Motul stuff - seems to be the best stuff that is i can get easily and at a decent price. I've looked into amsoil/redline/rotella but all of these are hard to find in wa and/or cost quite a bit.

If the subaru oil is a subaru australia product, then i don't think i'd get it...

You owe me one left nut. Syntrax is red, this is a typical Gold colour.

Have you tried http://www.performancelub.com/ for the Amsoil/Redline?

I've used NEO 75W90 HD and RHD in all my Subaru's (turbo's and non turbos) with great success.

Not cheap, but beautiful stuff. It just works and works danm well.

Linseed oil FTW, plus it doesn't irritate skin when you get it on yourself. I saw this doco on Discovery Channel about it.

Just an update, bought some oil. Going to use Motul again with 5w30 300v for the engine and Gear 300 75w90 for the gear box and rear diff.

That's just dye. A production run for Subaru could easily be done without it.
