Can someone tell me how they did this on stock internals? Or am i blind and do they also have a built bottom end that i didnt know about? Surely this car lasted no more than a week before cooking the pistons? If it was reliable, i would be happy to do that whole package for that price.

(I emailed avo asking the same question and am yet to receive a response)

360 HP ATW's is around 268 kw ATW's.

I know of a few Libs & Subaru's in general that are getting similar numbers on stock internals

What is different to the STI wrx 2.5 block that makes the liberty engine handle higher power? STI wrx 2.5 blocks die around 220kw atw apparently cos of sh!t pistons?

If this is all true, it's good to hear the liberty engine is tough. Stroking/building engines takes too long and costs too much, lol. I would be happy to have 250kw atw again.

Was just looking at your "Silly mods take 3" page.... What is the reason for keeping your boost at 16psi as you seem to have all the same mods as AVO said they had to hit 360hp atw. I am presuming you are trying to keep the gearbox alive? lol

Running 18psi and I'm auto

haha, that is what i wanted to hear! So their test car either blew up a day later (running 25psi) or had been strengthened.

The 2.5L block itself should be the same. Its actauly the same diamensions as the 2.0L block, just that the pistons are bigger and stroke slightly longer i think (not sure bout that one)

STi pistons are heat treated and not forged so can't cope with massive amounts of boost. Vinny at STi tells me that 16 psi is fine for standard STi internals, but if you go higher that that you burn piston rings out, but the piston itself will be fine. If you go forged pistons and rods, the engine can cope with up to 27 psi boost. Most people keep it around 25 for reliability. With the older 2.0L STi engines the pistons were forged as standard but the rods were not, so about 22-23 psi was the limit, the rods break after that and commonly "put a leg out of bed".

I don't know if the pistons in Liberty are heat treated or not, i would assume not and that they are the same as WRX.

Yeah, i agree. I just got the impression that AVO used a stock block to get their power figures stated in the above link and it gave my hopes up.

With the amount of police these days and laws 0-110 more than 200 is a waste lol, imo but still fun

Interesting info, for sure! I kind of put a halt on any more upgrades due to the sheer cost of new pistons, rods & the work involved. A 3.0L H6 twin turbo I saw @ Pulse the other day made me think maybe that's the way to go if you want some major power. Spend the $$ on that instead of the 2.5L - hmm just a thought!

I see MRT push 225KW on stage 3 and they recommend 'having a little chat' if you want to go further. Pulse also informed me along the same lines, as did some kind forum members when I was researching mods at the start.

So I wonder just how far you can go, safely, with stock internals and a bigger turbo? A new turbo & associated bits is way cheaper than including an engine rebuild too. I use the car for every day use and incurring a huge sum to rebuild a toasted engine would just be the suck. Ideally I want to find that 'safe' (a word used lightly )level and just be a little below it me thinks. But hey, if that level is about 250kw then its hello new turbo, hello extra 45kw.

I think Autotech ran a WRX up to that level a year or two ago just to prove that it could be done. The owner fully intended to get some forged pistons later anyway. I don't know what happened to it but it was running for a while. AVO probably just did the same
The pistons in the WRX and STI and everything else are hypereutectic i.e pressure cast and not forged. Great for meeting emissions targets due to the lower expansion rate and smaller height but they hate detonation. Too much advance and bang there goes a ringland . So with a safe tune you can still run a bit of boost but you'll find most wont run over 16 psi or if they do they'll taper it off rapidly after the peak. If you motor is pinging the timing is well out - its just not tuned
You can do things to get away with it too a point, run a big TMIC or FMIC and a bigger turbo all of which are better at supplying a cooler charge with less chance of detonating/pinging. You could also much around with fuel and meth injection
With the older 2L donks and their forged pistons you could get away with a lot more
