HELP!! - flashing lights on dashboard

Postby SMI77 » Sun May 31, 2009 7:57 pm

This afternoon I installed LED's in the map lights, fog lights and parking lights.

Now, when I start the engine, the following lights on the dash are on and do not dissappear:-

Outline of a motor - stays on
"SI drive" light flashes
"Cruise" flashes

Any ideas???

Dunno the answer, but maybe replace each one of the LED's (one at a time) with stock bulbs and see if same thing happens.... If it doesn't after replacing say map lights, then at least you know which area the problem lies. If it doesn't go away after all bulbs replaced... then yell expletives and go to dealer! :D

Tony, have you installed you know what yet? Because the CEL light and SI drive light usually indicates something's up with the engine, usually the O2 sensor.

Got it last time when my O2 sensor slowly died. Some people have gotten it from the O2 sensor that plugs into you know what coming loose. I also got it a while ago after my tune and gave it a bit of a hit on the freeway. A re-tune fixed it.

But I can't see replacing the bulbs would effect the CEL.

I think problem solved.

Did the Sentinel approach and started with the map lights. BINGO!!!
Reinstalled OEM lights & the dash went back to normal.
Reinstalled the LED's and no flashing lights.
Don't know why as LED's installed securely, with firm connection, just the same as the original instal.

When I first saw the flashing dash, I could not understand how the simple instal of LEDS would affect the other electrics.

The handbook says that if the Malfunction indicator light (outline of a motor) comes on steady during driving or does not go out after the engine starts, an emission control system malfunction has been detected.
I have no idea what the relevance is between the two.

Thank you gentlemen.

I had a problem a while ago with the sport light and airbag lights on. It was due to the wires not being properly connected to the reverse sensor box (hooked up using the stop lights power) and the fuse having blown. So I guess any combination of lights can flash for any reason?

After talking to Tony, he did mention he also change his filter to HKS one today where he also gave everything bit of clean inc air flow meter sensor.

So maybe the car was just trying to get use to thing??

I'm for Leo's theory. Tony, how many times had you started up the car before changing the dome lights back to the filament bulb? If it was 4 or more times the CEL would have gone away on its own regardless.

Either that or your car really didn't like how you installed that dome light. :P

Tony, I bet you turned your ignition on at some point with the A/F meter sensor disconnected. Either whilst doing the HKS filter or whilst testing your LED's for polarity.

I'm guessing this, because I did it twice - once for each of the above :-)

Cheers

(PS Didn't know the CEL goes away after 4 ignition on/off's - must remember that !)
