Stock BOV issues

Postby GTSPECB STI » Thu May 28, 2009 9:40 am

After all the mechanical mods and tune my stock BOV is really loud now and even worse in cool weather. It sounds like a bloody aftermarket venting to atmos BOV. I am tired of sounding like a ricer. Any suggestions on an aftermarket replacement that doesn't vent to atmos?

The only thing that will shut it up is going back to a 100% stock standard intake (including the filter).

So which part was it that caused the most BOV noise back through the intake?

my BOV noise is being generated when the BOV releases air when you back off the throttle. Its not coming from the intake but rather because of it and the fact that I there is way less backpressure and far more power being created as a result of the tune.

You should get a re-tune and go down to 10 or 12 psi of boost. That should take care of this pesky excessive air! :P Sorry, just stirring up trouble like Clarence.

I know how the BOV generates noise :P but I'm asking, which mod you did caused the most noise to come back through the intake system (as that is where the noise escapes the plumback system).

These items are your culprit.

The BOV is pumping air back into the intake pipe and the ZeroSport pipe, panel filter and little reso hole will let that air/noise flow easily out the front of the intake system.

Does the Zero Sport pipe go all the way from the turbo to the airbox or just the little bit from the end of the intake pipe to the AFM itself?

Sadly, any BOV you use that's a recirculating type will get the same result. And the cold weather thing is because you're building boost quicker (denser air) so you vent more pressure quicker.

Anything that impedes flow in one direction will also muffle noise in the other direction ... unfortunately.

Just the end of the intake pipe to the AFM itself. Is anyone else suffering from this same issue once they have done similar mods. Dense air is great but ricer bov sounds are not.

Yep, as you guys have probably seen, my airbox now looks like this:

And yes, I get spool and BOV noises, but certainly not offensive. This may change once the intake pipe and other components are done.
