GTB Weight plus mods....

Just wondering if anyone has bothered to weigh the mods they put on compared to the ones they have taken off? Stuff like STi wheels is a start....
It would have been a tedious task but thought I'd ask.
I want to weigh my car to see if all these mods has made a difference in the total weight of my vehicle.
I figured some of my mods would have saved some weight like the coilovers... possibly Brembo's??? Where as the sway bar and TBE would be alot heavier I think.
Does anyone know where to go to weigh your car in NSW?
10-20kg I don't think will make a huge difference in performance but then again, I'm not sure.... Anyone with experience on this?

WhiteGTB, depending on the resonator/centre muffler setup in your centre pipe, I'd suggest your car wouldn't have gained weight in the mod.
Sway bars, yes definitely a weight penalty. Brembo's (calipers and discs) definitely heavier. Coilovers? You'd have to stick them on a set of scales but I'd be surprised if they were lighter than what you took off it.
There are a number of weighbridges out there. Haven't used any in the past though.
This mob seem to have a fair number of sites around the place but whether they do cars or not I don't know, nor do I know how much it would cost.

20kg of unsprung weight is enormous. A 2kg difference in the weight of a tyre can actually make a big difference.
50kg under the bonnet, in the boot or going doof doof is bugger all as long as it is between the axle lines.
You sure the Brembos are not actually heavier?

They are called dumps.
Drive in and out at the same weight and there is nothing to pay.

dumps as in rubbish dumps? never thought of them (tip back at home doesn't have a weighbridge and never had to find one in Sydney). Cheers. where

if you go to the drag strip at eastern creek.. the left hand scruteering lane has its own weightbridge and you get a couple of 1/4mile runs in as well for $50

They weigh your car at the tip/recycling centre at Chullora near the RSPCA

Cool, thanks guys, will have to get around to Chullora, it ain't too far from me.
Brembo's... now that I think of it, yeah they are larger and heavier.
Might even have to go to the drag strip to test... while I'm there I might as well give it a run

When it comes to weight reduction, the best performance benefit can be had by reducing the rotational mass of the in the wheels/brakes area.
Not sure what the actual figure was, but it was something like a 10:1 ratio of weight removed at the wheel comparing to weight removed from the cabin. What that means is that a good lightweight wheel/tyre package can lead to significant improvements in acceleration.
Similarly, a significant reduction in wheel/tyre/brake/shock absorber/control arms package (basically, anything involved in the up/down/forward/backward/steering activity) translates to direct improvements in handling response.
So, ultimately, 1 or 2 kg saved on the exhaust is kind of irrelevent. Esp when you consider that you may have moved to bigger rims/tyre package, adding maybe 500g-2kg per corner which translates to up to 20kg equivalent in the cabin (or under the car) space.
I try to weigh all bits I take out and put in on the cars I play with, and typically I can get away with about an equal amount in and out. Well, that was until I brought a pro level sub which weighed 14kg on its own. As I always say though, these small variations on weight are typically offset more by what's around our waist, the laptop bag in the car, sports car in the boot, etc. So it's all pretty relative really.

Informative Craig, thanks.
