Keeping it separate from chrislak's post... Have any of you noticed that when you accelerate hard in full in "auto" or "sports" mode, the gearbox will shift up from 3rd to 4th at a very low RPM (about 5000rpm iirc).. It holds out all the other gears to redline, but not 3rd?

I also find that often (mainly when cold) the first 1st->2nd shift is horrendous, really lurching the car, even the wife has noticed!

The car has done it since I have owned it... so back to Subaru next week to check it out, just interested if anyone else has had similar issues?

One last question (non gearbox related) recently the engine seems to "tick".. its not that loud, but I can definitely hear it, and over all it seems the whole engine noise is louder than it ever used to be, when you first start the car, idle is all over the place until you engage drive etc..

Has anyone heard a "tick" before? My loal mechanic thinks it might be the torque converter?... being a manual boy through and through, I have a limited knowledge on A/T drivelines.. could this be the case?

I'll be taking the TMIC & Mufflers off the car before going to Subaru, to avoid any finger pointing!

the ticking: does it increase with engine speed? Could it just be injectors?

1 to 2 kinda pops and splatters for me.
Also with 3rd it changed like you said but only once.

The surging from first to second is common when the car is cold though i have never noticed a ticking noise, i heard a crunch noise a couple of times and shudder(slip).

I'm not getting a "surge" on 1->2 shift, it is literally like a flat shift..

i get the same problem from 1-2 when its cold, the car clunks and jerks when shifting =/ what has subaru said about this?

i get the manual shifting mode problem as well it will not redline even in manual mode =/

You know that Subaru techs at the dealership should be able to fix this....not.

A good tune might be the answer to some of these issues?

IN this instance, I completely agree! Having said that, in my first Liberty (GenIV GT with a 2.0T) the 5Speed auto was perfectly matched.. but with the 2.5T Subaru Failed!

I see that I didn't get my wish of a twin plate in the MY10 either!

There is noise when you first start the GT, sounds like it's probably the exhaust gases being recycled to better heat the engine from startup - suspect around 30 - 40 seconds this happens, then you hear it stop and something winds down. You will notice that it's a little throatier sounding when this is happening. The Merc Kompressor does the same thing.

As for ticking - no idea.

As for the jerky change - sounds like it's just cold.

Try warming up for a couple of minutes and taking it easy when you first drive off if you can.

How fast are you going when it changes from 3rd to 4th at 5,0000rpm?

Suff, was mucking around on the weekend, mine will go to redline in 3rd before changing, either in auto or manual modes.

Oh, sorry, forgot to mention that in my post and now I can't remember, perhaps it was around 135 or thereabouts. I'll have to check again, but definitely happily goes to redline in auto and manua.

On a cold morning, the first shift from first to second is very jerky on my 2.0T autobox as well. It seems to hold first for longer than required, I usually just get it into second gear as soon as I can with the steering wheel shifter

Me too tangcla, but I usually overcome this by giving the car a couple of minutes of warmup. If I have some gear to load into it before work I usually crank it up before opening the garage and loading etc, makes a big difference on the first couple of kms driving.
