The initial tune, (the change from factory settings) is where most of the cost is involved, a retune which is minor change to the tune is usually cheaper, some open source tuners charge $400-500.

its quite simple ..

a reflash is generic map flashed onto your ECU ...
an individual tune takes the generic map and customises the tune specifically for the car and its modicifcations .
a retune is where someone has added another modicification to the car & consequently the ECU has to be mapped accordingly to have the fitted part work correctly..

reflash costs up to $1,500
individual tunes can cost > $1,500 depending on dyno time.
re-tunes usually just cost dyno time if your nice to the tuner.

The reflash offered by AVO for the $1K price was a generic map + dyno based retune to suit your car.
At least it was, the last time I used them for this service.
Follow on retunes were dyno time and that's about it. (couple of hundred).

Nothing yet Sentinel,

Looking at getting work done in August.

I'm pretty decided on a relatively inexpensive 'stage 1' type of mod set that
will leave my car looking and sounding stock. I am not interested in
handling mods yet, i am wanting to get the biggest bang for my buck
to see a little more power out of the 2.5L.

Flat Panel Filter
Dump pipe only
Open Source tune at AVO

Anything else you might recommend?
Cheers

3 port boost solenoid (~$175) [EBC is better, but also $750+]
Silicon intake (there's a group buy, make the most of it ;) ~$300) [much better throttle response, much faster turbo spool]

Ideally, you'd open up the mufflers a bit to let the air out easier.

But with those mods, you should be able to push the peak power up quite a bit. The mufflers will be the restriction until you open up the flow there. The stock ones are super restrictive.

Heh-heh. I don't know if I'd classify a dump pipe upgrade 'Stage 1'! :D

Why do you think that?

2 port is sufficient for the level of upgrade he is talking, then with the option of an ECU controlled 3 port, you couldn't pay me to use an EBC.

More expensive is not always better.
