Timing Belt Change - second time, questions

Hi All,

Time is coming to change a timing belt second time (Liberty GT, 2010, EJ255). The current belt is over 100K and more than 5 years old.
Would like to hear your opinion on any extra work that as I heard people do as well when it comes to a time belt change.

That what I think of - is that feasible?

- change water pump to a new one
- change thermostat to a lower temp ( 21200AA072, 78 degrees)
- change coolant

What else would you look at and/or change as a preventative measure? I would not like to go to the timing belt area yet another time if something breaks or leaks there if it can be prevented.

P.S. Is there a single Subaru part number to a complete timebelt kit with all the required pulleys etc?

Appreciate your thoughts,
ilib11

Above sounds like a good place to start. What's the reasoning behind fitting a lower temp thermostat rather than replacing same for same?

Another thing you may want to consider replacing while its apart are oil seals, idlers and tensioner.

Thank you, RX25SE!

re oil seals, idlers and tensioner: I would believe they all are included in a timebelt kit, right?

Here is an example that VonBibra sells ( but they say it does not fit my car even when their description says it is):
TBKIT009
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/114509880616
1 x Timing Belt (13028AA231)
1 x Tensioner (13033AA042)
1 x Idler (13073AA190)
1 x Idler (13073AA142)
1 x Idler (13085AA101)
1 x Crankshaft/Oil Pump Seal (806733030)

Another one is here
TBKIT006
https://www.carmodsaustralia.com.au/Subaru-TBKIT006-OEM-Timing-Belt-Kit-WRX-01-14/STi-02-20/FXT-03-19/LGT-04-11
Based in the picture there it has idlers/tensioners included but not the oil seal.

re thermostat: well, I read the internet :) and looks like people are doing that to lower coolant temperature to prevent overheating and local boiling of the coolant. There are thoughts that increased coolant temp with the stock thermostat is just a yet another emission feature so it is better to return back to basics. Sort of risk reduction, I think.

Cast impeller water pump, assuming it fits a GenV…

Delete or replace the oem banjo bolt filter behind the passenger intake cam gear timing cover (again assuming GenV have these), if the cam seals are being replaced, pullies off.

If you’re doing cam seals, get a set of single edit *DUAL* avcs TiC FU bolts: hex head cam bolts instead of the oe allen head cam bolts.

I went with tbkit006, installed a Fluidampr at the same time.

The lower temp tstat is probably not required, better off getting an obdii app with virtual temp gauge and alarm, eg Btssm.

Thank you, bigBADbenny - lots of new info from you to think through, that is kind of usual :)

I thought about Fluidampr before - got quoted like AU$ 700, thought it is expensive. Did you see any improvements once you got yours installed?

Also Aisin or oem Subaru timing kits are said to have the best quality bearings etc.

The Fluidampr will make you wish your valve train etc was good for 8k rpm.

It all feels well smooth over 4K rpm.

Iirc I got mine from… Jegs in the USA so maybe… $600 odd depending on shipping & exchange rate.

One of the big retailers on eBay…

I was extraordinarily, and temporarily cashed up, doing mega 10-12 hour nights, 13 on 1 off at the time.
Wish I’d bought more stuff tbh. :swoon:
