cold start chatter in park and neutral

Strange noise when cold start. Quite loud for first 3-5 seconds then settles down , then goes away after a couple of minutes.. Does it in park and neutral but not in drive or reverse. Once warmed up it's quiet as a mouse. It's not an " I've ran out of oil" death rattle, it more of a chattering sound. It all started about a week ago when the " timing hole plug between the engine and transmission turned from rubber to brittle bakelite consistency and was half inside the bell housing rubbing on the metal disk near the flywheel. several small pieces have broken off and I suspect have fallen into the bellhousing..I have since replaced the plug but it has made weird noises when cold, ever since.. it's an 07 2.5 auto. Apart from that it is running normally..

Can you post up an audio clip of the noise?

I get this very occasionally, probably the starter motor not fully disengaging.

Iirc CorgiWerx offers a starter motor refurb service.
