That's what Subaru Ryde says. Around $2,500 to replace. Should I go somewhere else and can I get it done cheaper? Thanks.

That's more than a little steep. You could have a pretty good ball bearing turbo for that kind of money.

On a Liberty can you just replace the turbo "cartridge" It is a lot cheaper because the cartridge is cheaper to buy but also the outer "housing" can stay connected to the manifold and the exhaust saving a lot of labour costs. I did a cartridge replacement on my 4x4..Worked a treat..

You have to remember that dealerships don't repair components anymore they just replace them. Given a new VF46 is around $1800-$2000 RRP and dealerships charge top dollar for labour $2500 is about right. Can it be done cheaper elsewhere, certainly. Can it be repaired, depends on the wear/damage to the turbo. Is it time to upgrade to a VF52, that'll cost you at least $2500 once you factor in supporting mods and a tune.

A VF52 can be had for only $1460 vs $1870 for the VF46 from GCG, so is it worth going that option? I think so

Also, a rebuilt turbo can be modified for greater performance from a reputable turbo workshop and still only cost similar money or less to what Subaru want to sting people for a new one.

Also when you say supporting mods for the turbo, what are you alluring to?
I know a tune should probably be done with a different turbo, but the VF52 is otherwise plug and play. Other modifications may be desirable, but not required.

NB... I know nothing about Liberty's so the above info may be totally wrong...


I would be very careful selecting a replacement cartridge for one of these. IHI only sell complete turbos, so all of these are aftermarket copies, some Chinese, some American.

Also just FYI the turbo on these is a VF46 not VF52 as per your link. Parts are much harder to get but still obtainable at a price.

Has the car been correctly diagnosed?
Eg what are the symptoms?

My vf46 is going great at 270k’s, replaced the pcv at around 220k as preventative maintenance, a blocked pcv can increase crank case pressure forcing oil through the journal bearings...

I’m not suggesting that stock turbos never blow, but knowing how or why would be a key consideration.

I’d get an opinion from a specialist turbo rebuilder/upgrader eg rose rage turbos:

Sw1WJZJ62a , using "contact seller" via this link and ask them if they do a cartridge for you specific model...Kinugawa is one of the worlds largest manufacturers of turbos which are used in many of the worlds new turbo cars from the factory. I recently inquired about a new turbo for a Prado and I got a genuine "toyota" turbo from them for $990 inc gst and freight...They don't , at the moment have turbos for the Prado or highlux but they had bought the "toyota" turbo to do some reverse manufacturing of toyota turbos for Prados and Highluxs and had finished with it. They reassembled it, rechecked the balance of the turbo and tested it and sold it to me..They took a week to make sure it was good and sent it express freight. You never know what they may have... they will need the exact model and serial number of the turbo in your car. I have dealt with them a couple of times and they have always been very helpful and eager to please.. The toyota turbo went into my son-in-laws prado and is perfect.. Toyota wanted $3200+ for the same turbo...

I haven't heard about this affecting the Journal bearings before, however it does make sense. Need to do my PCV too, my oil consumption it a bit high if I boost more. Where did you buy yours from out of curiousity?

The local dealership, or maybe a cleaned low k item from the wreckers re pcv...

If my turbo did blow, I’d remove any remaining turbo/avcs oil feed banjos and replacement braided lines.

I have the same mild oil consumption issue... and having torn down a 150k my08 stock ej255 w/ blown head gasket, I’d say its gummed oil control rings if not valve guides/clearances. Plus the beginnings of spun bearings.

The VF52 is "plug and play" in that it bolts straight on but when is that ever the case. If upgrading the turbo, and as the original turbo is on the way out I'd say there'd be 100k + kms on the car, I'd be looking at the fuel system (pump + injectors), the blow-off valve, the turbo intake pipe (known to fail plastic item), definitely a tune, and the exhaust. Most of this would be preventative maintenance to ensure reliability but also upgrading the turbo for better flow would be pointless without improving the inlet, fuelling, and exhaust. If going with the VF52 because it's cheaper initially, (turbo $1470, tune $400+, install labour $400-500 non-dealership) you could get the others done later depending on vehicle health.

If you’re setup with a tactrix & Romraider etc, a Torqued Performance e-tune with revisions is usd$100 or so.
ThrottleHappy (if still tuning) was $400, street or e-tune.
Gotitrex, Warwick/ShadowTuned around $800, dyno tune iirc.

I’d add silicone throttle body hose (avo/Kobe), pcv clean or replacement, inlet smoke pressure test, and banjo bolt filter hunt, plus upgrade turbo/avcs feed :)
If upgrading injectors, new inlet manifold gaskets. :D
