My vf46 is going great at 270k’s, replaced the pcv at around 220k as preventative maintenance, a blocked pcv can increase crank case pressure forcing oil through the journal bearings...
I’m not suggesting that stock turbos never blow, but knowing how or why would be a key consideration.

I know a tune should probably be done with a different turbo, but the VF52 is otherwise plug and play. Other modifications may be desirable, but not required.
The VF52 is "plug and play" in that it bolts straight on but when is that ever the case. If upgrading the turbo, and as the original turbo is on the way out I'd say there'd be 100k + kms on the car, I'd be looking at the fuel system (pump + injectors), the blow-off valve, the turbo intake pipe (known to fail plastic item), definitely a tune, and the exhaust. Most of this would be preventative maintenance to ensure reliability but also upgrading the turbo for better flow would be pointless without improving the inlet, fuelling, and exhaust. If going with the VF52 because it's cheaper initially, (turbo $1470, tune $400+, install labour $400-500 non-dealership) you could get the others done later depending on vehicle health.
