Engine knock

Postby LibertyGT08 » Tue Nov 27, 2018 8:02 pm

Hello, recently my engine got a knock and it was my bearings. I was wondering if it was better to rebuild or just get a second hand motor, one is more expensive than the other. Not interested in selling

Depends on how good your local Subaru engine builders are.
Your budget...
& how long you can wait.
New 257 short is a good option...

Sorry I didnt see this earlier. Mine is an 08 gtb, and got a knock at 121k in late 2014. It was in the suspect batch of late 07/early 08 turbo engines with big end problems. Took it dealer, they confirmed knock, checked that ECU had not been altered, and all services done, and offered me parts(new bottom end, gasket set, oils), I pay for labour and outside work (heads cleaned, flushed etc). I added a clutch and an oil cooler(suspect if its had particles through it). All up cost me $4200. Labour was around $2.4k, heads $500. Quick service, no signs it was ever done, apart from new engine no noted on invoice. I believe a bottom end runs around $2.5k.
If you can persaude them the engine was in the bad batch, give it a try, if your service record is good etc.
