help needed!! turbo and P0011 P0021 probelms

Postby themainsully » Fri Jun 01, 2018 5:32 pm

Hey im new here
i just bought a 2007 MY07 GT Spec B wagon auto, with 139,000kms on the clock 2 days ago with roadworthy and reg. within the first 24 hours the car stalled and then i turned it back on to have check engine light come on, the cruise control flashing and the Sport mode flashing. took it to my mechanic to run a diagnostic, to which i got:
P0011 A CAMSHAFT POSITION - TIMING OVER-ADVANCED OR SYSTEM PERFORMANCE (BANK 1)
P0021 A CAMSHAFT POSITION - TIMING OVER-ADVANCED OR SYSTEM PERFORMANCE (BANK 2)

i found the thread named H6 error. but then the turbo started making noises which scared me alot. ive attached the video,
it sounds like its coming from the turbo.
https://youtu.be/Hg8aOZie1Uw

someone please help, i wanted to be in love with this car but ive only owned it for 2 days and this has gone wrong.

The first step for a diagnosis is to log the car using Tactrix, Btssm or any SSM compatible logger.
From memory those cels point to an AVCS fault.

So log inlet avcs vvt angles at 1700rpm stationary and during freeway cruise.
Graph the log and look for avcs angle inactivity or oscillation.

Replace the affected avcs ocv (oil control valve) or change both.
They’re around $150 each online.

I can diagnose and fix in the central Melbourne area.

However the video of the turbo chewing gravel sound points to a bigger issue...
I’d say don’t run the car till you get that inspected as if the turbo is self destructing, you want to minimise the amount of metal contaminating the oil.

You can inpect the turbo shaft runout for excess play by removing the inlet pipe or the exhaust dump pipe.
As a stock journal bearing turbo, 1mm axial play is normal. More play eg enough to allow the compressor to hit the housing is a fault.
If you want a quick way to check if metal from the turbo compressor is entering the inlet, remove the intercooler to look for evidence.
To check if your engine oil is contaminated, drop the oil and look for metal filings.

It’s a long shot, but possibly your turbo has been starved of oil due to clogged filters in the avcs and turbo oil feed lines.
That would also explain the cam/avcs related cel codes.

You’ll find those filters on an my07 Gt under the turbo inlet pipe (gallery feed on top of the block) and in the banjo bolts of the pipes supplying the avcs ocv’s.

What was the exact sequence of events that lead to the situation in the video?

at lunchtime the day after i picked the car up, the car seemed to stall as i was turning into a street, i thought that was strange in an auto. i turned the car back on to get the check engine light come on with a flashing sport and cruise light at me. i took the car straight into my mechanic to run a diagnostic on the car, he got the codes up and told me the time is out for the car. and said he thinks this problem has been reset before so contact the dealer who sold me the car to get them to fix it. he reset the code. i drove the car away as i was under the impression nothing had snapped or was doing any real damage. then the turbo started making that sound the next day. towed it back to the mechanic.

if metal has contaminating the oil is there a fix to that? or is it gone gone? if its just the turbo would you advise rebuilding it or replacing it? sorry for all the questions im very new to the Subaru scene, and not much knowledge in regards to turbos as well.

also i believe the turbo is a VF46, ive read people swap these for VF52, i dont have heaps of money to go into fixing this car as i just spent it all buying the car, what would be the most cost effective way of getting this car back on the road and not causing me any trouble?

the car is in south east Melbourne right now

also with this problem would/should this problem be picked up in a roadworthy check? which was done a few days before. also should i just got to the dealer asking for all my money back and give them the car back, and just find another liberty, or could this be an easy fix?

It’s hard to say based on the current information.

However there are plenty of threads online regarding the fixes once the actual issue is diagnosed, as I outlined above.

If you do have dealer warranty, now is the time to use that, either for a replacement car or get your car fixed by a Subaru specialist (not the dealership preferably).

If you can’t access logging locally, start with dropppng the oil or removing the intercooler, looking for metal flakes.
It’s hard to tell from the video, but rod knock or blown turbo seem to be the worst case scenarios that you need to rule out.
Perhaps try to match the sound to YouTube videos, eg search “Subaru blown turbo” “Subaru rod knock” etc
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9sVHCa0AeI
Suspect blown turbo, sounds very similar.

The fix includes removing banjo bolt filters, a thorough engine flush, sump & oil pickup removal & flush and replacing the stock oil warmer that’s in between the engine and oil filter. There’s probably more, I’ll dig up a related thread.

Find a secondhand stock or stock upgrade turbo, or new upgrade turbo and get the car tuned.
Or abandon the car, it really depends on the extent of the damage or contamination, and the trustworthiness of the workshop performing the repairs.

Here’s just one out of many: https://legacygt.com/forums/showthread. ... 00081.html
Hit the 2x links posted there: they’re comprehensive, but bear in mind some slight differences between usdm and eudm (audm) cars...
