Stock turbo upgrades

Postby Shaheenis » Wed Mar 07, 2018 9:38 pm

Just toying with something.

So if I was thinking about changing my VF52 to something that will come on boost a bit earlier like the VF46 and pull harder in the mid range but also outflow the VF52. What are my best options? 6SPD target power max on stock injectors ~180-200kw @ 18psi. Is twin scroll a good option? Upgrade the core in the 52? Small Blouch?

Cheers,

i'm about to run a billet wheel vf52. expect same spool as a vf46 but a lot more grunt through the mid and high rpm.

^nice :good:
It’s old tech now but I still have an avo380/400 type bb turbo in the stash, with the 3/4 exhaust housing for response.
Apparently that type of turbo (GT2871R iirc) is good for stock like spool yet still able to comfortably run to 26psi iirc.
Plus there’s at least 2 available exhaust housings if eg you want moar low or high...
So the newer types (GTX RS) should be even better.

Buying new, I’d consider garret gtx, the latest avo’s or blouches, or better still a Borg Warner if they do something for stock location.
Nutting out how to read a compressor map will give you bad thoughts lol, plus some understanding of the turbos capabilities :)

Twin scroll would be awesome but factor in at least an extra 1k for a decent set of el ts headers with ceramic coating...

Can’t wait to hear how the billet wheel vf52 goes tho ;) six star or???

Was thinking a modified VF52 could be a good option as I already have one and would like to keep the cost down.

Jarren, where are you getting yours? I don't want to pay~$2K when I have a turbo I could upgrade. Does anyone in Australia offer these upgrades to the VF52? I do like the sound of earlier spool and stronger mid range. I like the VF52 but just find the 2.5ltr a bit doughy off boost and I do a lot of driving in traffic so the sooner on boost the better but of course I don't want to sacrifice any top end 8). I also don't want to over capitilise on mods (supporting mods) as I am not sure how much longer I will own the car.

What’s your current tune strategy?
The latest ThrottleHappy tune is awesome, it was could change one thing it would be the throttle as boost controller going to WOT at say 80 or 90% pedal angle... it’s currently at 100% iirc.

Could it be the hot weather crushing the sprightliness?
Water spray might help with that.

I’m looking at your member profile to see what the current exhaust setup is ;)
I see you’ve upgraded the mid pipe...
It’s still 2.5” tho.
The tbsti muffs should be fine for producing low end torque.

Ben, VF52, Mishimoto TMIC and radiator, upgraded fuel pump, 3-port boost solenoid , pre-turbo inlet, TurboXS dump with downsizer. Grimmspeed uppipe waiting fitment, Kido tune (~18mths old) with LC and FFS).

How have you found the AVO? the 420lgt sounds like a good match to get most out of stock injectors? I don't really feel like I need more top end, just want the car to get up and boogey a little easier - more responsive. I would prefer to deal with someone local.

Been doing a bit of reading on the GT Pumps GTPS02TM. Anyone had experience on here with them? Might be a little laggy but looks like good value for a new turbo ~$1500.

Nice, get Matt’s latest tune asap, I just did after a 2 year hiatus.
Dom gtbsti just got it with 8/12/16, LC, no FFS, throttle angles equalised, throttle as boost controller.

It’s a no-nonsense tune that’s eminently drivable in all SI modes.
I’d say that might delay unnecessary turbo expenditures ;)

Ben, good call, I contacted Matt today and he is on task cutting me a new rev.

I was thinking really the VF52 is a solid turbo for my goals and really the GT Pumps versions is very similar. I just prefer a ball bearing turbo and you know what its like you get bored and want something more *special* ;).

I’m not even joking that my way around this is to enjoy Matt’s tune in I mode as a default driving mode around town or wherever. It’s no longer the spongey crap delivered by the stock tune schema.

It just feels like a 2.5l on 7psi and can definitely be hustled when required.
The other modes simply bring more urgency to proceedings.

Whenever I feel the need for MOAR, flicking the SI button is the antidote.
Even when I install the upgrades (one day  ) I’ll keep the same tune schema for sure.

my vf52 will be a billet wheel compressor wheel. nothing special, just a rebuild and slight wastegate port to prevent boost creep. also may throw on a turbosmart adjustable wastegate as well.

Fair enough. I was considering speaking with my local turbo shop to see if they could replace the core with ball bearing core and billet wheels but not sure that can be done easily without the right R&D. The mob in the states I think has done a lot of R&D which involved making custom compressor housings etc.

Update that tune first ftw.
6 Star Speed can probably supply the required parts.

Just received latest tune last night and updated (to v7) but haven't really tested out yet, just drove to work. I always drive in S and feels pretty good so far. It has been a while since I rel-flashed so I forget whether this is a thing but my idle drops until I have driven for a couple of days and it comes good. Like it is learning how to idle.
