Diff and gear box oil change

Postby phatmonk » Tue Dec 13, 2016 12:24 pm

Hi!

Going to change the diff and gear box oil soon. Poking around, I've found these pretty useful:
http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.p ... 94834.html
http://www.subarulegacy.com/tech-articl ... ssion.html
viewtopic.php?f=16&t=28295

Condensing what I've pulled together, from the above and other places:
* No focus on brands. 5 liters of full synth 75W90 oil is right for the 6MT diff and gear box.
* Have a T70 bit handy
* It doesn't really matter about the torquing the plugs. If it was tight, put it back on tight
* Undo the top plug on the rear diff first
* 1/2 drive will undo the rear diff sump plugs

I'd like to ask if the GTB has the same "issue" with the exhaust in the way of the top plug?

It all seems easy...

Cheers!

Beware!

Some 6MT use a HEX Plug on the Front Diff while later ones use the T70.
Do not drain the Rear Diff until you have the Fill plug loose.
Nulon G70 additive improves the quality of the gear change feel, especially if you are running a Short Shifter.

That's a bit epic. Did I miss it in the thread? What fits the hex plug? Found your Facebook page earlier today, I'll be hitting you up for a power steering pump in the future.

buy the company23 13mm square drive tool, the 1/2 tends to slip and strip them out, especially how tight they are.

$USD14.95 is fine for the bit. The $35USD+ for shipping is a killer. Around $AU65 for slow postage is steep especially for a bit I'd use maybe three or four times.

... time to find something locally!

Turns out the sump bolts on the diff didn't require a 13mm square drive socket. Can't recall what the imperial socket was that fitted it perfectly, but it was just a regular old bolt.

Both gearbox (T70) and filler bolts were tight. After a good shocking they all came out with no fuss and filled with Penrite Pro Gear 75W90 all round.

Added a tube of Nulon G70 to the gearbox. It could just be new oil, or a combination of new oil and additive but it shifts awesome.

Thanks for the help!
