Howdy, n00b here,

Now I have read up about what people have been doing when there turbos have blown but I'd really like some advice.

So I've recently purchased a 07 GTB, everything checked out no dramas. Within the first week of driving it the turbo had blown up on me :(.

The mechanic said it was because it was starved of oil as well as the oil line to it breaking.(engine is swimming in oil at the moment)
He has given me two roads to go down (Quote will be attached), Option A is a rebuild of the turbo coming to a total of $4000 and option B which is a second hand turbo coming to a total of $2800.
With the rebuild of the turbo he is guaranteeing 12 month warranty, with the second hand he is giving it a 3 month warranty.

Now my first question is do these rebuilds really cost this much? Am I being taken for a ride? He strongly suggested I go for the rebuild unless we want to be having this conversation later down the track again.
The second hand VF46 he has priced at $880, If i was going to with this option B I was thinking of Kinugawa's as they are $1000 and it would be brand new. Do I need supporting mods to have one of these, or will a tune later on suffice?

Definitely crack pricing, vf46's go for well under 880, maybe like 300-500.

If it's worth mentioning I got a vf43 and dump installed for $400, kept stock oil line, can't See a new one adding 2k into the cost

Yeah that mechanic of yours is ripping you off.
I wouldn't expect that sort of pricing even from a dealer using brand new parts.

Try taking it elsewhere and provide your own turbo.

Maybe even get a vf52 with a bit more top end :

I'd learn to install it yourself. Plenty of youtube videos how to do so.


Lastly get a nice tune to match.

I'll do it for that much please pay me :D

If i was in your situation i would get either a vf52 or Kinugawa TD05-18G (8cm Rear). Depends on what other mods you have and what your plans are. You could always go a little bigger and get T06-20G.

I myself am planning to go GT3071r as my car is daily driver and i like mid range response. The garret is a little more expensive as its not journal bearing, but in saying that Journal bearing turbos will last just like any other turbo if they are fed oil :P

Coming from the Automotive industry myself this does sound like a typical price. It cost me $1500 to swap my vf38 on my lib and that was with a dirt cheap kiniguwa core($500), You need to take other things into consideration such as labor rate, where he sources his turbos and consumables such as oil and oil filter not to mention how difficult a turbo swap on these can be its no 5 minute job, there is also a bit of risk he is taking as you may have contaminated oil that could cause knocking issues.

Hey Jake, I completely see where your coming from. I was assuming that the turbo swap and any other repairs were being done DIY. That's why i thought it would be cheaper. Obviously if you don't feel your capable in performing the repairs you pay $$$ for the quality that you want :)
