Turbo whine from cold start... turbo dying?

Postby Riffnugget » Sat Sep 24, 2016 10:31 am

Hey guys. Yesterday I was driving up a hill at about 3-4k rpm and I started hearing a noise pretty much exactly like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGhmm2RGUEI
Took it straight to my mechanic, he took it for a test drive and it didn't make the noise. Said nothing was wrong, and it ran full boost without problems.

This morning I cold started it up and took it around the block and sure enough it made the whining noise again past 3k rpm.
By the time it was warmed up 20 minutes later it was fine again.

I can't help but be worried about it, is the turbo on the way out?
I should mention that the gtb is completely stock expect for hks panel filter, tune by Matt, and a grimmspeed 3 port (which me and Matt installed on tuesday).
It's done nearly 164000km.

Think I'm gonna start saving for a replacement vf46 :(

Thanks for any help, much appreciated

Power Steering Pump?
They sound terrible when they suck air into the fluid and your MY2007 LGT is the right age for the onset of Power Steering Pump issues?
Especially prone to bad sounds at cold start then going away once warm!
But I know nothing about PS Pumps? LOL

hmm it could be, but the whining noise gets higher in pitch as rpm climbs.
Power steering pump is like a flat grinding noise? I'm not sure.

When I finish work tonight I'll record a video when I start it up cold. Cheers

The PS Pump Pulley is connected to the engine crankshaft via the accessory belt drive.
Therefore PS Pump rotation and excitation frequency is related to engine RPM.

Check your banjo bolt filter for turbo oil line feed

Its somewhat louder than what I hear in that video.
Idling is fine, only starts whining with 20-30% acceleration.

I took a video last night and tried to isolate the noise. Here it is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPK-hMfkSVs
The whirring/whining can be heard from 2500rpm and then stops after around 3200rpm.
Steering feels fine, I'm thinking there might be a boost leak somewhere.

^^I'll check the banjo bolt today, cheers

Update;
Checked the turbo feed banjo bolt, no filter in there.
Matt reckons its a boost leak somewhere, although I'm not too mechanically savvy and I can't find any obvious leaks. I checked intercooler to throttle hose, it was fine.
Any other places prone to boost leakage?

Its been responsive as its ever been and runs at full power with no problems, so for the time being I'll put up with it.

Are you hearing it with eg a bt adapter etc plugged into the aux-in, but nothing playing? I had some rpm specific interference coming through the sound system that sounded like a whining turbo, had me worried till I figured it out :P

Get a spray bottle with dish soap and water, agitate but don't shake, spray boost side piping from turbo to inlet mani etc, whilst your assistant revs the car in neutral, 0psi is enough to create bubbles :)

If not try the $3 oring and bleed the ps system, eg a doz gentle lock to locks on stands, then figure 8's in parking lot, whilst checking the ps fluid level. New fluid if it ain't a clear cherry red iirc...

Iirc the Postfl banjos are on the engine side of the 2x avcs cam oil supply banjos, they're really deep and didn't pop out till I blew out the galleries in the heads post hot tank. The turbo feed filter if any is in the banjo right under the turbo inlet pipe, atop the rhs case...

Right ok, the banjos I checked wouldve been the avcs ones then. Under the inlet pipe? wow thats a huge pain to get to.
I dont have any accessories plugged in btw, I always drive with stereo off.
Ive seen tutorials on youtube about the dishsoap and water method to find leaks, I'll try that in the next couple days.
Thanks BBB

Can you get the noise revving on idle?

You only seem to get it when cold? Maybe check accessory belt tension, but don't over tighten...
Also accessory belts can build up gunk on the outside edge, fix it by holding a med fine file for a few secs on idle, on those outside edges...
And the big idler pulley bearing on the lhs of the engine bay (passenger side) can wear out, replace with new (eg partsouq) or replace the bearing itself...

Ok I think I found the culprit
IMG_2469.JPG
IMG_2469.JPG (67.62 KiB) Viewed 4146 times

It was slightly coming off the throttle body and somehow torn inside. Clearly I wasn't looking hard enough
New throttle hose ordered. Hopefully this solves the noise. Thanks for everyones advice
