more info on tbsti model

Postby vinshonz » Thu Aug 11, 2016 12:19 am

is the gear box in liberty tuned by sti the same gearbox in an STI? (strong, not as weak as the 5 speeds)

do the normal GT-B also have the same gearbox? or is a 5MT +1

also how do you find brake pads for the tbsti brembos, or are the same as a normal GT-B just that the calipers are brembo

Cheers

Hey mate,

The 6MT isn't exactly the same as the one in the STi Impreza there are quite a few differences but yes it is much stronger than the 5MT. All manual Spec B cars both, the 2.5 turbo and 3.0 H6, came with the 6MT and Bilstein suspension.

The Brembo brakes are about 10mm larger in diameter than the standard GT brakes and the calipers are opposing piston as opposed to standard sliding calipers on the GT. Totally different brakes and pads. You can Try Street to Track on the forum here for good pads...or Subaru if you want to pay more than the brakes themselves.

That depends on what you want to do with it. I've seen STi transmissions break at stock power levels. It'll all depend on how you build and drive it.

If it's put behind a 300+kw engine then obviously you'd strengthen the trans as well. It's common sense. For anything the standard EJ255 block can put out the trans will most likely handle.

Mechanically, the Liberty Tuned by STi is just a regular GT Spec B with some fancy brakes and a few STi bolt ons. It is not built by STi like the S models.

Hmm when looking at people selling their liberty tuned by sti they claim its got the unbreakable sti 6 speed gear box..

Also http://www.caradvice.com.au/13420/2008- ... ed-by-sti/

The 2008 Subaru Liberty GT tuned by STI is available in both sedan and wagon. Buyers can pick between the unbreakable six-speed STi manual gearbox or the five-speed SPORTSHIFT automatic. The car is only available in black, silver, grey and white.

I dont know whos got the right info...

It does have the sti derived 6 speed in it, however it is not unbreakable...no transmission is

It is known to be very strong though and there are lots of other things to worry about before you worry about your 6 speed failing like your pistons for a start

I know nothing is unbreakable but it atleast withstand 250-300kw right?

I come from a wrx pushing 200kws with a 5 speed.
I have 2 potential problems, if i want more power engine or tranny will let go, if engine let go i dont want to build a motor knowing the 5 speed will snap.

If i get a liberty with 6 speed, atleast i know if i pop the motor i can build a better engine safely handle 250-300kw and know the 6 speed will handle it fine

This seems common for a lot of wrx owners, making around 200kw atw as the safe limit.

Sell and get an STI with a 207 instead of putting 10k into a wrx. Or switch to a different platform if you're set on making huge power, I've found that subaru's really lose kw/$ past like 200kw

Just my 0.02c, I'll probably be nearing 180-200kw atw soon. Fun times, hope my 5mt and ringlands will cope :)
