There's no cheaper alternative? It seems like a bit of a waste to pay $250+ for something I'm only gunna use a couple of times.

There is a good used market for them, if you buy it and sell it second hand you wont have to wait long. Similarly, you can just wait for one to pop up for sale

vagcom is way cheaper but will require a bit of nerding up and research at your end...
I've not used one so I don't know the nitty gritty...
Either way, regular logging & LV health checks are a good idea for any aging high performance car...

I managed to get a tractix from eBay for $250 plus postage. Now I've just gotta get in touch with Matt.
