257 to replace a 255

Postby Jordan.k » Fri Apr 29, 2016 12:52 pm

Hello,

Getting some funny business in my car probably a head gasket knowing these engines (haven't taken it for tests yet etc)
But a used 257 short block out of an 06 STI (65xxx kms) popped up at what I believe was a good price ($1000)

Would the ej257 bolt up in place of the stock 255? My engine has only done (120xxx)

AFAIK only difference between the two is the Pistons which would bump up the compression ratio a bit, suppose a thicker gasket could amend this though.

TL;DR is it worth my money or just buy a bigger turbo for the 255, chasing 200kW tops anyway.

An Ej255 can easily support 200kw atw.

Having said that. If you've done a head gasket you may as well upgrade.

Scope and budget for the project?
DIY?
Master gasket kit, timing kit, upgrade studs and head reco will cost around 1-2k alone depending on supplier and workshop... Amazon/Ebay will be cheapest for parts, head reco 200-400...

Budget about 3k~

Semi-DIY as I would be pulling my own motor and then probably take it to someone or a workshop to handle all the head work/timing etc as I've never really done that before.

No set time frame but sort of want it back on the road within 1-3months
Right now I have a small list of what I'd need (tested positive for combustion gases in coolant :)))))))

Head gaskets (oem or thicker)
Inlet manifold gaskets
Header gaskets
Oil pan gasket (to check if its f***ked)
Spark plugs
Oil + filter (fortunately have a few)
Rocker cover gaskets and bits (already purchased as one side was leaking badly)
KillerB oil pickup (maybe)
DIY tgv delete
Genuine coolant
TB kit + water pump
Upper and lower radiator hoses + new hose clamps

Probably could be done fairly affordable if my stock block is OK, but wouldn't be fussed if I have to put a 257 lol

Have a car that I can use to daily drive so it is not my only mode of transport while it is down.

Probably will get most parts genuine from partsouq

Probably a gates timing belt kit from eBay

Let me know if I'm forgetting anything crucial,

-Jordan

I took the option of building a spare long for minimal downtime.

Kept my long block

Got an ARP2000 head stud kit
New genuine timing belt kit + sti cast impeller water pump
STI mls 0.55mm HG's
New thermostat
Heads machines/recoed
New drivers side cam solenoid
Top and bottom radiator hoses replaced
New ocv sensor
New AC pulley
New PCV hoses
New spark plugs
All using genuine parts (all supplied myself besides AC pulley and PCV hoses)

Was running like a new car for the first few weeks now there's a huge flatspot at 2-3k rpm in lower gears but then pulls on boost fine (feels a bit slower? Maybe used to it)

My gut and my tuna 8) tells me it's likely to be a clogged fuel filter, any suggestions .

Will give the ecu a reset today. Just don't want it to lean out and crack my ringlands lol

Since you replaced one avcs ocv, I'd check logs of the vvt angles as per the various DIYs, iirc hold engine at 15-1800 rpm in gear clutch in. If the car stumbles within a few minutes, defo log that. Same for top gear cruise on freeway (can't feel the oscillation but can be logged comparing L&R vvt angles)... Log it before ECU reset or do a coupla key ons after and watch the vvt recalibrate whilst logging.

Also re new ocv sensor/solenoid... You mean cam sensor?

Yea think it was a cam sensor, #pn 10921AA080 VALVE AY-OIL CONT

Don't have equipment to log myself but im fairly close to a few subaru workshops which would probably know whats going on.

Aside from questionable behavious when trying to get on to boost, it idles smoothly and free revs in neutral fine

Should have mentioned I did that after you recommended (about 1-2mins in first clutch in) held normal and sounded fine

Great! I'd recommend a BtSsm setup for logging, LV and virtual gauges, if you can find an affordable android host it can be done on a sub $150 budget... Eg $20 for the app, same for a vag com...
