New car - blown turbo :(

hey guys, need help

bought a 07 GT the other week,118***kms, got checked over - everything fine. took for a drive that night and turbo blew out on me. just got back from the mechanic. got this response. 'Inspected and confirmed noise in turbo. possible engine ran out of oil or lack of oil pressure, causing damage to bearing. requires new turbo.' got quoted over $4000 for new genuine turbo + 6hr labour @$152 per hour. what are my other options regarding replacing the turbo. looking for cheap/reliable options, But any advice will be greatly appreciated

I'd be taking it elsewhere.

You don't really need to go with a genuine turbo.

Have a look at some of the upgrade threads and you'll see people going with other brands which cost under $1000 for the turbo.

Putting the turbo in is also pretty straight forward. You will find many guides on how to do it and should be able to do that over 1 day. Maybe plan it for the weekend.

$4k just seems way too expensive to me.

Another option is pick up a used but like new condition turbo for $600 or less and drop that in.

^^^ Yep, used VF46 or stick a $1k Kinugawa turbo on it.
$152 per hour?? Is a heart surgeon putting it on?

Brand new stock turbo (vf46) for sale on here for $1000.
Might be worth considering. Would certainly work out a lot cheaper than you were quoted.

You could get a brand-new VF52 from someone like Celtic Motorsports for around $2k (the VF52 is used on WRXs, it's a direct fit to an EJ255 engine). Wouldn't take anywhere near the labour quoted to get it done at a decent independent workshop.

Or, as others have said, go for non-OEM for even less.

Callum - As everyone else here has suggested, who ever quoted you that price is clearly reaming you.

Lot's of options by the looks of it. As I mentioned to you, buy your turbo elsewhere, and get someone else to fit it for you if you aren't handy with the spanner.

Thanks heaps for the replies guys, potentially found myself a vf46 with just shy of 20,000 Kms for $500 and can probably get a mate to install for me much cheaper than previously quoted. Feel much better knowing I don't have to fork out close to 5k hahaha. Cheers guys-hopefully will be back on the road in no time

Good idea getting the vf46. Saves you the cost of a tune if you bought a vf52 etc.
I changed my turbo in 4 hours with no previous experience.. not tricky at all, just get yourself a breaker bar as the bolts can be tricky

Due to the previous turbo blowing up, which the mechanic said due to lack of oil/oil pressure (I'm putting down to pressure) is there anything vital I need to check before installing the new one? Don't want to buy and install a new one only to get the same problem down the track..

Banjo bolt oil line filter on turbo side of the engine . Its on the head in the oil feed line

Check the quality of your oil - maybe run some Delvac through the car to clean it out a bit - knowing you want to be changing it pretty quickly if you do that, as you don't want the sludge it cleans out of the engine circulating for too long.

Good oil is critical in turbo subies - fully synthetic would be my recommendation. I personally run Penrite HPR5 5W30 in my car - there's plenty of recommendations you'll get for oil brands though.
