Ryco oil filters for the 2.5T

Postby Ollygt » Thu Oct 22, 2015 3:24 pm

I'm still wondering why in the Ryco catalogue the Liberty 2.5 turbo uses a different oil filter to the WRX with the same engine.
The WRX one has far more oil paths in it and doesn't look any larger, about the same size and diameter. Are the subaru genuine filters the same for both these engine applications.

For a gen 4 07-09 2.5T the ryco # is Z436. same as most of the wrx's from memory.

Yep, exactly. Z436 for either.

For some reason they also list the Z709 for lib, which looks a little simpler.

Z709 is the transmission fluid oil filter for the Automatic transmissions.
You may notice a [TR] following the number under the Ryco listing
Just like this......
Z709 [TR]

By the way, for the new FB engines for Impreza and Forester which specify the Z436, also the Z411 is listed as an alternative.

Haha that explains it, problem solved.

They have it listed under the 'Oil' column, while the 'Transmission' column is empty for the GT-B.

On the Gen 3 N/A liberties with their rear facing exhaust manifolds an 82mm diameter oil filter was used.
This was also used on early WRX engines (pre-2000 models) and the early RS and B4 twin turbo Liberties that had smaller exhaust manifolds (and may not have had an oil cooler??).
These are the only models that list a different oil filter to later model WRX/Libertys.

On later models the proximity of the oil filter with the larger exhaust headers wrapping around the front of the engine sump, the WRX/Turbo Liberty engines has required a smaller diameter filter to be used. Nominally 70mm diameter.
See image. http://imgur.com/n8mjsFN
Also, the additional height from the oil cooler unit meant that a short height filter is required, lest the filter become exposed below the headers.

Reference your other post and questions regarding a larger capacity filter viewtopic.php?f=7&t=31290&p=418360#p418360.....
A taller filter like the one for FB engine Impreza/Forester could be used, Ryco Z411. However, both the under body clearance to the plastic splash tray and protection from possible mechanical damage from under car obstacles would need to be confirmed.

Thanks again everyone, very helpful. Yes I didn't notice the [TR] beside the filter probably should've shifted this to their transmission filter section, in their online filter finder they don't seem to list an oil filter for the 4th gen B-Spec anymore. All you get is this:
L9 GT-B Petrol 4 2.5L EJ255 [JC] 9/2006-8/2009 Z709 [TR]

pretty sure K&N makes a better replacement fo the # Z436

any one use one ? used one?
Mods over standard include:
-washable HKS air filter
-B Spec Bilstein shocks
-DBA 4000 slotted rotors (front and back) inc Remsa pads
-Full turbo back exhaust system
-Safe ECU tune by Pulse Racing

yep k&n actually make 3 equivalent filters, a 'standard', 'pro series' & a billet washable oil filter.

i'm going to run the ryco Z436HE which is a high efficiency filter (hence the HE following the part number) which requires the oil to be drained every 5k kms, which i will probably do every 4-5k.
The reason for a more frequent oil filter change with the ryco high efficiency filter is because it traps ALOT more than a standard ryco.

So many Subaru experts recommend the genuine Subaru filter, Given they are only 10-15 bucks, use a genuine filter.
Kinda flush. Fitment is something. ADM as F*ck.

^This a million times over. OEM does a better job than pretty much every filter out there.

I'm using the my09+ RX8 Oem filter, same exact specs as the Oe Suby 2.5t but 30% larger (longer).
It's also a black Tokyo Roki branded filter :) <$20 from the local Mazda dealer...

Read all about it here:

yeah don't get me wrong i would definitely run oem filters, but when i'll be dropping oil so frequently i don't think it'll make much of a difference.
if anything k&n filters are made to the same spec as Mobil1 filters (same lab) who have a great rep in the us. there are many cut opens which explore the difference in filter materials and capabilities of the filters.
