<GB> - did you have oil leaking from yours? Kyp mentioned the oil feed lines should be drilled out a little... (however my mechanic mentioned over-oiling a ball bearing turbo can make them eat oil).

Kim

nah I think that was from cleaning the area with brake cleaner

not sure what kyp recommends with oil feed lines, though pulling them off and replacing with braded lines and cleaning the small filter basket would be good

Kim don't take this the wrong way - but why are you so hell bent one something like this that's untried and untested and slightly more expensive?

You keep referring to a garret type or garret core - this cannot be the case pure and simple. Only thing to come close to being garret would have to be the front wheel (and maybe the rear wheel). Whilst these are important, the sum of the parts does not net you a Garrett turbo. The "ceramic" ball bearings are not garrett standard issue that's for sure. Garret uses ball beatings in all its bb units.

Which tells me the Chra is not garrett, the front and rear housings are not either

As Ian said above, the Mitsubishi style (td0XXX) housings are shit for backpressure and overall design.

If you're that hell bent on stock location, stock turbo flange style turbo, go with an ATP (American atp) bolt on Garrett gtx3071 with the 3" inlet 0.60 front cover and be done with it. Guaranteed to perform and no mucking around without contending with gold silver or bronze medal verdicts

Ah my bad, you're correct the ATP 080 housings are made by Mitsubishi. However has been customised to suit garret style ball bearings.

I was keen to look at this turbo as it was something a little different to the usual off-the-shelf turbo. While it's not really known in the Subaru scene, after chatting to Kyp for quite a while on the phone I decided to bite the bullet and get one. Going for the silver though - which is very close to the gold, just slightly smaller to fit in the stock location without requiring a grinder.

A bit of an impulse decision on one hand (all my car mods are impulse decisions really) - but I have no doubt it will be a nice match for the car :) Happy to be the guinea-pig I guess, so will report back! :)

Just for comparison sake, here's the Blouch TD05 18g with 8cm rear housing on the left, and the ATP Sti silver on the right. Considerably larger rear...

Housing looks the same as the one I had on my 20g xtr. Obviously it has been machined out to suit the larger exhaust wheel. Have a look on the side of exhaust housing facing the compressor housing, it will have a number on it. That is the nozzle size in square centimeters, which will confirm it is a mitsu housing. I am willing to be the number 7 or 8 will be there!

So on the left is the 20gxtr and on the right is a blouch td05-18g. You can see the 20gxtr has pretty much the same housing and machine around the turbine as your silver thing. Most likely started life as the same housing found around td06 wheels.

Theres no identifiable numbers on it - I think maybe they've been machined off. But tep I think td06 housing that has been machined to fit the larger garret style wheels.

Having had some time to think about it, I belive that housing (your one and the one that was on my blouch) is the 8 cm housing. Just been a while since I played with stock location turbos.

Edit: nope. No apparent logic in the housing design.

I googled, the number which tells you the size of the housing is in inside the turbine inlet! My memory, like my looks, fades.

Not too sure about the brave new frontier, but I don't sell them, so I don't have to make them sound like the next big thing.
I think they will be a decent turbo, and it is great if the money stays in Australia too, but at the end of the day any stock location turbo is a compromise, and is based on a Mistubishi exhaust housing.
