They sold me a dud *sigh*

Postby clarcus » Sun Sep 27, 2015 9:09 pm

So heres some background story on the 07 Liberty GT Spec B i bought from a Subaru dealership im not going to mention right now. I bought the car from them with an MRT XB package already done to it. So that is Turbo back exhaust, tune, slotted and drilled rotors.
I bought it with 128,XXXkm and from what i could tell a family owned it before me with the baby seat marks in the back and all.

About 2 months down the track is when all these problems started to happen.
I started to notice the clutch was slipping i got that done through warranty as well as a rocker cover gasket, oil hose and intercooler hose leak. I then took it back to them again about the oil consumption. They ended up taking the intercooler out and found a "loose" clamp or something. They said the drained a significant amount of oil that was in the hose. I personally can't see how that can explain a litre of oil a week and considering the car was not blowing any smoke AT ALL, i dunno :L. Any way after picking it up i noticed significant power loss. I called them up again and they said to bring it in when i can and they will get someone to go for a ride with me. Later that day i had an engine light come on, cruise light flash on and off and also the car put it self into sport mode and wouldn't let me change it. Monday came and i drove to work and got it towed back the Subaru Service Centre that im not mentioning. That was last week. They've said they done a compression test with the results of something like 120, 125, 115, 119. They are continuing to monitor it and test it for the oil consumption and power loss. Its been almost 1 month if you add up all the time they've had it for. Although they did say if it really was going through that much oil that they would put in a new engine or something.

Just wondering if anyone has had any similar issues?

Heres a pic of it for all the curious people.

Contact the previous owner and ask a question?
Did they trade-in a dud?
Their details should be in the owner's handbook?

Depending on how much oil you're talking about being in the inlet, I would say one or more of your piston rings / ringlands is shot and causing the excess oil blow-by.

Just called up today, there going to rebuild the engine! He said that they drove it 150km and it already used up 500ml of oil (half way down on the dipstick from full).
The bad new is that im going to be another two weeks without my car :(.
The good news is that its all covered under USED car warranty and there will be another two years warranty on the engine.

Holy smokes. You are lucky. A rebuild is not cheap by any means. Believe me, the 2 weeks wait is a walk in the park compared to forking out retail for a rebuild.

Alright, so i made a mistake. There going to be putting in a NEW bottom end and rebuilding the rest or checking the rest, i dunno something like that. So im virtually going to have a new car when i get it back :O.
Any tips on wearing in the engine?

Start, drive off gently after a couple of seconds, no need to idle for minutes.
Drive gently until oil temp (not water temp) reaches operating range.
Once warmed up, drive with varying styles - Differing speeds, let it wind out on occasion.
Try to avoid just sitting in one rev range for hours on end.
Do not 'lug' the engine.
Try to avoid very short trips where the engine is unlikely to warm up.
Oil + filter change after a few thousand KMs and you should be good to go.

This is my method, and my cars tend to last well over 300,000Km with zero problems. YMMV

Just an update.
When they first told me they were going to be putting in a new bottom end they said that my car would be ready by next week Tuesday (20/10/15). I called up on Friday and they said theres no chance that it will be ready then as they have had people off *cough* bullshit *cough*. They did offer to put me in a loan car which i took up. Sadly NA and Automatic but its a new Impreza, hasn't even done 2000kms.

Crossing my fingers for the week after next week my car will be done.

Sorry to hear that it has been an unpleasant start. In the end your lucky that that are doing the bottom end under warranty. Good outcome even if you have to wait a few weeks.
