Knocking on firewall ? Or near passenger side

Postby THE SpecB » Sat Aug 22, 2015 9:17 pm

Driving me crazy! My wife's GTB gets a light knocking noise sounds closer to passenger side.

Inconsistent to say the least. Pulled over and noise was still evident in cabin but I could not hear anything under bonnet.

Any one expirienced this as its very frustrating.

Can you describe the knocketing sound?
Sometimes the ventilation fan can emit some strange ticking noises depending upon what particular speed the climate control selects?
Trying varying the controls for everything and see if the sound is related to any setting or appliance.
Try grasping and releasing the gear lever, worn shifter bushes may also rattle with the correct encouragement.
Good hunting!

I find that at a particular fan speed my car has a particular "rattle" that can be removed by manually bumping the ventilation fan up a setting.
Annoying sound that I just have to live with?

Maybe you should try pulling the glovebox out and checking the cabin filter for junk. Its surprising what can get in there and maybe something is rattling around in the vents.

Did that thanks Dylan filter is new also

It's so hard to describe you hear in on pass side then it goes away and can't hear it in engine bay.

Hot days - aircon been on in the day

Check the dampers on the fuel lines, the big round black knob looking things on the strut tower. The fuel pulses through the hard lines that run through the cabin so they tend to make a lot of noise. If the dampers are tired the pulses get worse and so you hear it a lot more. Replacing/removing the dampers might make it quieter but you will never completely get rid of it.

Will check thank you but wouldn't explain air con only when on or hot days

I have the same sound on my gen 5 auto wagon. Drives me nuts. I have uploaded a sound clip. You can hear that çhugging noise that comes on and off between 500-1200 revs when the engine is hot. You can hear it at stand still if you slightly turn the wheel and the revs go up a bit.

I asked Subaru and they don't know what I'm talking about.

I also heard the exact same sound on another members gen 5 wagon (but manual). So it seems like a design fail. http://www17.zippyshare.com/v/e802L5v0/file.html

Please let me know if you find out what it is so I can cut it out with an axe...
