Well my Vin is anding in 069546 so i wonder if its worth going to subaru to see if they will cover some of the cost. Only issue is its already in the shop getting fixed so i may have missed the boat :/

In an earlier post it was stated that the EJ257 is semi-closed and stronger. The EJ257 short block is semi-closed just like the EJ255 and is exactly the same block (so no stronger), just the pistons are different (slightly higher compression) which were paired with lower compression heads versus what we got with the EJ255.

I've decided I'm going the 257 short block too.
Are there any issues with the higher compression? Do you go for a thinner head gasket to lower the compression?

Adam, it is a common and sensible replacement/upgrade path so I wouldn't be concerned but make sure it is tuned properly. Lower compression is more desirable for more boost. Thinner gaskets would increase compression so you wouldn't want to do that AFAIK OEM steel 3 layer gaskets are still a great choice unless you have reason to change them.

Some more very useful info in links below for those interested.

Do I just email rising sun? They seem to just have build options on their site that require my block.

If you fancy a drive and holiday at the Sunshine Coast give AMAuto a call. I discussed briefly when getting my major service and the replacement estimates for a new 257 block seemed very good and these guys are very experienced with replacements - ask for Miles ;).

Yeah just email, or give them a call.
You're just looking for the EJ257 short block right? They should be able to source a brand new one for you.

Also as Tim said. The guys from AM Auto also would be another option.

I stand corrected. I was thinking of early wrx.
